Old V8 Cummins

Anybody know anything about these? Got an old dump truck out at the ranch with a V8 Cummins in it, that was rolled over about 6 months ago, and were about to scrap it, but I was gonna pull the motor out and tear it apart, and rebuild it just for fun and if it turns out good, might put it in something. Any tips, or info on these old engines? Are they any good or even worth messing with?

Is it s 903? We tried to find parts and they where tough. Have since scrapped the motor. We're going to put in in place of a 290 in a cab over ford 9000 that lost a piston and it was easier to replace the piston. That was also 15+ years ago.

Ya it's a diesel. It should still run. A guy we had workn on the ranch rolled it on it's side last march, and twisted the frame and messed a bunch of other crap up and it'd cost more to fix it than it's worth. I dono what year it is. I think it's a 70 somethn but it's in a diamond rio dump truck if that'd help someone identify it better. I dono though, might not even b worth the trouble, but I figured since were scrappin it anyway we could pull it out and have some fun with it just takn it apart and messin with it, and mayb if it ends up runnin good we can put it in somethn else. So any info y'all have on it would be cool.

the 555 and 903 are the VT family V8 cummins. old. heavy. low powered. junk. like the 3208 Cat.

if it works use it. if it doesn't, its not worth anything except scrap weight IMO.

If its the 903 it should be really good at converting diesel fuel into noise!!!

It was normally known by truckers and mechanics as a 9,0, nothin'! One of my fleet customers had a fleet of them. They had good mechanics but could not keep them together, finally went to the 855's and no more trouble. I live on a hill and have heard lots of them pulling logs go by, they had a distinct sound to them.

I always thought they sounded like the old 534 CID gas pot Fords. To me the Mack V8's sounded about the same.

Ill be helping him with this engine, and we're just playing with it, so reliability isnt much of an issue....

Ya it's literally just for fun. We don't really care if it runs or not when we get done with it, were just gonna pull it apart to have some fun with it
