OBDII Code Reader Problem?

I've been thinking about buying a generic OBDII code reader to go along with the key cycle routine for checking DTC's. I have done some searches on this and other websites and it appears that a generic code reader can be plugged into our truck's 16 pin connector to check for codes on the PCM and ECM.

However, I ran into a problem today when I spoke to a technician at Innova regarding their Innova Equus 3100a and 3030 series readers. He told me these two code readers would not work on my truck because it was not OBDII compliant. The ceiling GVWR for OBDII compliance is 8500 lbs. The GVWR for my truck is 8800 lbs. I couldn't find anything in my owners manual; Chrysler service manual or under the hood of my truck that said it was OBDII compliant. Since I can't afford a DRB scan tool and its' related software, I guess an inexpensive generic code reader will be a waste of money. Do you guys have any thoughts on this?

go look at "Scan Tool". It's about $375. with the enhanced add on for our Cummins equipted trucks. I use mine and it's ok for a limited use tool. You can't readjust the speedo for tire size change or anything like that but the enhancements for your particular vehicle allow a LOT of investigative code retrieval. It has a nice format, plugs into your laptop and you can do real-time reading of motor operating conditions. Also tells fluid pressure and stuff like dwell tiime for each injector...etc/.
check it out.

DB, thanks for the tip but $375.00 is out of my price range. I was looking for something less than $100.00. The two Innova models that I cited met that criteria. All I want to do is pull DTC codes if any are present.

I have an Actron Super Autoscanner CP9145. It will read all vehicles to the present year. I've pulled code from my parents Santa Fe, and a friends Nissan. Keith

I have an Autoxray scanner and scan all trucks to one ton. If it has an OBDII port there is no reason why you can't scan it. Research out different scanners. I think they're blowing smoke.

On edit. ktpauley. I'm a Seabee Vet also. (66-69) Don't seem like theres a bunch of us around. Terry
