No substitute for common sense
My edit is always sano.
When my clients look at my rides, all they can see is cool stuff
. I feel this is the only way to stay credible.
I got sick of working on my older truck....so I bought a new one! Insert fuel, turn key, mail payment.
Now they all think I'm making too much money

Ha what a load of crap. When I was wrenching I always had top notch cars/trucks/equipment. Never was in debt enough to be burnt out at the end of the day not to work on my own stuff.
Now I am a custom house builder, and I live in and own the second nicest house on the street. We actually use it as our model home.
So your theory is full of crap.
But getting back to the original thread: I'd be looking for a new shop to get my work done.

bottom line..that's the problem. They don't get paid to work on their own. The service/fleet manager prolly wasn't x military though, PMS (Preventive Maint Schedule..NOT pre etc etc
)is the way to save money in the long run. fix it now..won't break later.

They do get paid to work on their own. This mechanic had just serviced this truck one week earlier. The truck is assigned to him. He drives it and maintains it, on company time and the company pays for the parts. No excuses, just lazy.
As a car and truck mechanic, I've seen alot of crap but the absolute worst I saw was a 73 Dodge Dart that an old lady had. She bought it brand new and NEVER EVER changed the oil......It had 192,000 miles on it and she brought it in because it started to make some wierd noises.
I listened to it and it had some lifter noise on the right bank of the 318cid.
Talked to the owner of the garage and we decided to pull the valve covers off and see what we could find. We initially thought a lifter may have collapsed. I unbolted the valve cover and had to pry it off. I found another valve cover molded identical to steel one underneath. Only this one was made of crusted carbon.
I had to literally chisel a hole in the carbon just to see a rocker or valve spring. All she ever did was add oil to the engine whenever it needed it.
All the rockers and pushrods were completely encased in hard carbon sludge. The pcv tube was totally plugged with carbon.
The engine was still running but only made noise. We had to tell her the engine had to be either rebuilt or replaced. It was no use trying to repair only one bad lifter.
Needless to say somebody got a decent body Dart owned my an old lady at a real cheap price to make a street rod out of....
and I didn't have the money at the time to do it.
