Cummins in a Coronet?

Well I'm new here, and I have some questions about the Dodge Cummins.

Here’s the deal; I have a 68 Dodge Coronet that I want to drop a Cummins into. Now I know it's not that simple, but I think it can be done. But I do have somewhat of a limited budget... so I will be doing all the work myself and getting parts for as little as I can.

Here are my questions;

1, what would be the best year to get an engine from? (I want a mechanical one.. I don't care for electronics)

2, transmission, what years? (Right now it has a auto.. and I would like to get an auto with over-drive, which probably means electronic controlled)

3, how big is a Cummins? Length? Height? And how much does it weigh?

Right now the car has a 383 bigblock with a 727 tranny, I would keep the tranny... but I want an over-drive tranny for better fuel economy.

So far I've figured out that the best engine would be a 2nd gen. 12V from 94 to 98, I do plan to do some mods to get more performance out of it, but not a lot to start with.
It seems as though I can come up with 1st gen. engine a lot easier, how easy are these to get more power out of?

I know a lot about Chevy 6.2's and 6.5's.. But basically nothing when it comes to Cummins, their good years, bad year’s etc. but that’s why I'm here!

Anyway, thanks for any suggestions you guys might have! I have a lot to learn on here.

Thanks!
Ryan

I'm not sure about length or hieght I'll have to go measure. But I believe the Engine ways just a tick over 1,000LBs. I would think a 96-98 would be one of the best engines to get because they had the most power stock. As far as the first gen I don't Know I've never Built one.
