new diesel truck and smoke

Since I bought my truck a few weeks ago (1st diesel), I'm more observant of other diesels. Rarely do I see much smoke. Mine smokes like heck until it warms up. Then it smokes less but still noticeable in the side mirror (which I angle so I can watch). Is this a symtom of all new Cummins or just mine. I have about 350 miles on it and the smoke is bluish-white. Other info: I start it per the manual - a few minutes idle time. Then I drive it. First 2-1/2 miles are downhill. I drop 1200 ft to get to town. It's certainly not warming up during this time. It takes another couple miles of flat driving for the temps to come up.

Sorry if this has been beat to death but I couldn't find info about if a new diesel smokes more. Thanks in advance.

It's cold in CO this time of year, isn't it? That sounds like normal white smoke to me, it's just fuel that's not being burned because the engine is too cold.

How cold is it? Pretty normal for a very cold diesel to smoke.

Not that cold, 30 yesterday when it was smoking bad, until it warmed up. Today was about 45 and it didn't smoke as much or as long. I'm probably just over concerned becasue it's my first diesel ... and my new toy.

I noticed you have a manual tranny...try to keep the RPM's up in the 1600-2000 range and it'll warm up faster. It should also have the automatic high idle when it's cold. It should start up and about 30 seconds to a minute later it'll run up to 1200 rpms or somewhere in there. That helps it warm up too.

Don't be too concerned about a little black smoke...these guys love it: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...5&pagenumber=1

Those smoke stories are hilarious.
What's the trick to making smoke when the truck is warmed up? There's a lot of drivers w/ attitudes around here. They could use some "learning".

I don't know if a new stock truck will do it much, but flooring it in too low a gear makes a good cloud. Try 5 mph in 3rd, if it won't roll smoke then you'll need a fueling box.
