New Diesel Power magazine

Just picked up the very first issue of Diesel Power magazine. Pretty cool. The cover story is a test between the big three. And if you havent read it yet you might be surprised to see what they have to say.

I was surprised to see the winner of the shootout was Ford. Dodge performed better than Ford and Chevy in the 0-60, quarter mile and 60-0 without a trailer and was only slightly slower than Ford with a trailer, but still stopped faster. And Dodge was several thousand dollars less. I did notice that the editor is a Ford guy. Don't know if that had anything to do with it.

The ford was faster with a load behind it (which most folks here will be in denial about, or claim the test was wrong), and the owner/editor has an 05 powerstroke. Combined with the fact that the dodge didn't come with the tow mirrors, it's pretty expected that they'd pick the ford. One thing they didn't factor into their tests was reliability, another durability, another maintenance cost. Basically IMO this is a 'cosmetic' shootout - no real meat to the articles.

Oh well, at least there's a diesel magazine! It says for Diesel Enthusiasts - however I didn't see a single MB or VW diesel in there, or even the liberty CRD. Maybe they aren't as broad scoped as they tout.

I'm sure they got some money or free stuff from Ford.

This sounds a lot like the diesel shoot-out Truckin' Magazine did last Fall.

The Dodge won in ALL BUT TWO Timed Run /Performance catagories where Ford won.(by a very slight margin).
Chevy was dead last in all catgories.

They picked the Ford as the overall winner (because the Dodge didn't have the optional Tow Mirrors, and they said the Dodge was "twitchy" on the road.)

Yup it's the "Golden Rule"

He who pays the Gold - Rules.

If the big three comparo is anything like the past, They get the CTD with 4.10 rears and the others have their highway gears (3.73) and expect the speed to be the same... Morons.. I remember they did a drag race with the three and they had the CTD with 4.10 and the 6 spd.. Man, your arm would be sore trying to keep up to a DMAX Alli with 3.73's... Joke..

I can't find the mag or the comparo to confirm this...

The reason they used the 6 spd. was that they compared the cummins H.O.and in 2002 that was the only transmission available. I don't have the magazine with me but I am pretty sure they all had 3.73's. The Dodge also was the only one with a short box I believe.

The ONLY reason I think the ford was so quick is because of the new turbo design. They spool up "right now" and that I'm sure helped get it on tap faster than the other two. As for the top speed test where the trucks reached max speed while towing up a grade, well I bet that too had something to do with the quick spool of the Ford too because we dont know how much road length the trucks had but, giving how the test favored, I'd bet their test length ended just before the Cummins was bringing on the power.

The bmw vette is an old car, and the touareg v10 is a 'truck' of sorts. I was referring to the 'car' diesels, like liberties, TDI jetta/golf/beetles, and mb e320CDI's etc. Maybe some future diesel vehicle features we haven't seen yet. Oh well, it was only the first issue, we'll see what else comes next. It is really annoying they didn't get themselves set up for subscriptions before coming out..

This magazine and Truckin' are both published by Primedia. The article was reprinted word for word, and the same pictures were used too. I'm impressed.

Yea, sounds like been there done that stuff all over.
Buddy has a gasser ford f250 4x4 handles well rides nice, kinda like a car. But he does have tow mirrors!!
Nother bud has the chebbie , can't say its a car either cause you could haul stuff in the rear as long as ya kept your foot to the floor, but again, he's got the tow mirrors.
Maybe thats why the ford won, Dodge is a truck with great steering response and no Tow Mirrors.
Liked my 1500 02, the 2500 02 Hemi and then got religious and went 3500 04 CTD.
Did enjoy the mag though, lookng forward to next issue sometime in June I think they said.

Reading another thread on fuel cost, you guys need to come to Connecticut, paid $2.45 and 9/10 last fill . Gonna round trip to Washington state this summer, plan on bringing lots of green to feed the tank cause I'll be pulling the fiver.
