Second half of their explanation ;

Many of the modern Cummins engines do not even record in their stats the size of the cylinder. Nowadays they are more concerned with fuel economy and emissions. Keep an eye on the weight of the engine and that will give you a clue of the size of the block and the cylinder size. Here are the best modern equivalents of the Cummins that can give you a clue. Most marine gas engines are Chevy blocks and the original gas engine for this boat was a 350 Chevy block which gets 300 horsepower. The modern Cummins ISV 5.0 is a 305.12 cubic inch Block. It is an 8 cylinder and gets two hundred to 275 horsepower. However it is for light trucks and therefore they reduce the weight for economy. The other Cummins engine you can compare is the I SL9. It is a 6 cylinder which gets 270 to 450 horsepower but it weighs considerably more then the ISD 5.0 at about 2,000 pounds compared to eight hundred pounds for V 5.0 . All the modern engines have turbos for the air and are designed not for horsepower but for more fuel economy and cleaner emissions so it is hard to make a straight across comparison because nothing really matches up. Truck engines are concerned with torque to get the loads up hills and there are many ways to achieve that and get good fuel economy and better emmissions. In the old days it was all about horsepower. Hope this helps.

They are doing everything but telling you what the engine actually is. Run for your life.

I'm interested to see where this goes.

I second and third.

They could honestly be that dense as to be repeating what they have been told, but even if they are that dense, would you want to chance that the engines have been maintained correctly?

You are correct but unfortunately I'm dealing with a broker and not the owner. And when it comes to buying a used boat I always assume the worst. I just pray they a survey will reveal misuse or neglect. The motors do sound awesome and did fire up very easily.

There should be a data plate on the engines that will give you all the info you are looking for. You also want to check the transmissions and parts availability for them.

Don't know anything about them personally but if you google them you will find they were dependable but are old and now hard to get parts for.
Common replacement is a 6BT.

I would bet Cummins may have info on them, if you can get the info off the data plate, or maybe member HOHN could get you some info or steer you in the right direction...

Boat brokers don't know anything about this stuff...

Ford owns Cummings, by the way...
