louder then d-max
louder then d-max
A buddy of mine has an 03 duramax, with the old LB7 engine, and his is quieter at idle, than my 04 600 engine, is this normal. People say how quiet the 600 is, well I think that they are louder than the DMAX?
What do you all think?

When I compared them I thought they were about the same in terms of noise. They were on different lots so one may have been slightly louder than the other.
They are probably close enough that which ever one had higher cetane fuel would be quieter.
Also, when people talk about how quite the 600 is they are probably comparing it to the older generation cummins. Relative to the older generations, the 600 is very quite!

The 600 is very quiet. That said, the DMax and PS6.0 are quieter, in my opinion. I don't think they sound like diesels. At least with the 600 I KNOW it's a diesel and provides that wonderful, comforting diesel rumble on a cold winter's morning.
i think the dmax is deffinately a lot louder, i was filling up yesterday next to a dmax and i thought to myself i was mad about the dodges getting quieter but im glad there not as quiet as the dmax, i have the 03 so im not sure if its louder than the 600... any1 know?

I live in a campground in central pa.You know what time it is in the morning.First thing you hear is all the ratteling and banging then you get a wif of that sweet smell of deisel in the air. Some of my neighbor's hate the smell .I tell them it's a diesel thing -you wouden't understand.Especially in mid winter.

I test drove the PS6.0 and 600 same day. My wife (whom I had to appease since she 'allowed' me to purchase the Dodge - married life really stinks) even agreed the 600 is much quieter, and you may buy it. She said 'No way' to the PS6.0! It was noticeably louder in the CAB, forget outside. Thank God it wasn't the other way around!
Just our opinions here!
Seems to me the inline-6 sound of the diesel, even when common-rail quieted as in the '03's and newer, is the TRUE diesel sound. The common-rails simply sound like a diesel symphony, rather than just good old hard rock!
The V-8's today simply sound odd, especially the 6.0 (valve clatter)

I've found it all depends on the engine. I've heard d-max's that are louder than other d-max's. I've heard PSD 6.0's that are louder than other 6.0's. Maybe some of them had lots of valve lash...I don't know...or maybe certain ones were more broken in than the others. Or maybe some of them were about to fall apart!
