Just went to the Detroit Diesel website to see the new 4.0 that Ford is considering for its F150 line of trucks..And to my surprise, I see that Detroit Diesel is owned by DaimlerChrysler!!
Ok, wheres Hoss..Hes behind this..
IF, DD is owned by Chrysler, why are they using Cummins?? Besides the obvious reason..we like them..Wasn't DD owned by GM?? Can anyone enlighten me??

Your not confused.
Mother DC builds the Sterling trucks that you buy at your friendly Ford Heavy truck dealer.
A few years ago, DC went out on a buying spree and bought up all kinds of heavy truck and truck part manufacturers. Great way to sort of control the competition.

Re:Jeez, now I'm really confused..
Detroit Diesel does not make an engine in the power to weight class with the same dimensions as the B5.9 Cummins. DC entertained the Benz diesel idea and found customer interest very low compared to the American Cummins. The 5.9B Cummins is at the weight limit of the Dodge chassis (most are 4500lbs on the front axle empty) GM tried to shoehorn a Cat 3116 into a 3500HD a few years ago with numerous problems. Board of directors look at profit margins and DC cannot afford another 80's disasterous truck sales scenario. PK
Re:Jeez, now I'm really confused..
Detroit diesel was a GM company at that time GM also owned Allison they put that tranny with the Detroit Motor alot. GM teamed up with Penske Corp in the late 80's. I don't know all of the events but somewhere along the line Penske had control of Detroit and at least for a short time it was Penske diesel they even had the name on the building .( I made tooling to cut the top deck, block ends and cylinder heads for many years for Det. diesel) About 2000 DC bought them and started what I think is the DC powersystems division. I think they claim to be the largest producer of Diesel engines. I think (and hope) that DC knows a good match when they see it and that is why they stick with cummins. At the time DC bought Penske it was called Florida Detroit Allison so did DC get control of or a piece of Allison Transmission too?

DC owns Aisen [sp?] transmissions...an auto trans for HD truck applications. I wonder if that will make its way to the RAM?
I think its available in the 04 Freightliners now.
As I mentioned a long time ago...Detroit was/is working on a prototype for the Ram and medium duty applications.
At one point Calgary was going to be the prototype testing grounds for the winter climate testing. Dunno what happened to that.

Detroit started having real winters again a couple years ago, so they probably want to use the local proving grounds.

aisen is a Japanese company. Who owns how much of what stock wise...I am not sure. They put these trannies in toyotas and jeeps....pretty good one too! Our 4runner has one and Gramma's Jeep cherokee (righthand drive mail truck 1999) 80,000 hard mail route miles and shifts like a champ...I do keep the oil and filter changed regularly though........I do not like the autos, but this one seems good.
It is amazing what GM and Chyrsler got their little beaters into during the 90's......off/on topic.
