If it's anything like Caterpillar NOT MUCH. They use a steel plug in an aluminum pan and if you do much more than finger tight you will be using an impact to remove it next time. Even at finger tight you have to lean on them a little to get them broke loose. However the last Cummins I had (N14) had a steel oil pan and this wasn't a problem (except the pan rusted )

Just a question who actually uses a torque wrench on a drain plug?

Wow that's odd, it's rare to find someone who goes the extra mile for other peoples stuff. Most use the 3ft 3 second warranty.

I guess im not really sure on the book torque, I torque all my oil pans, rear end plugs, tranny plugs to 40 ft lbs, never had a problem . Comes off nice and easy every time. We have some guys at work that use the 24" ratches and grab a spring and see how big they can flex there musles, Dumb kids

well we have a private account with a big customer and if anything gets messed up it's my neck on the line. I used to use a torque wrench on the drain plug on my 5.9, back when I still cared.

Hey guys, one of my mechanics did an oil change on one of these trucks and left the old filter o-ring on the base. Friday is a good day for terminations.

We had a truck pull in the other day, well coast in actually. Oil filter came loose and they drove it all the way across town to ask us to check why it had no oil. It seized up right as they turned into the shop.
