Our patrol boats made by SeaArc use the cummins 5.9. As soon as I pulled up the engine hatch and saw it I loved that boat more than ever! The boat is like 35 feet long, weighs a LOT, and still pulls 40-45 knots through 4-5foot swells.

The 300 and 370 injectors that we use are made for the marine cummins engines.
Go here http://www.cmdmarine.com/ then click on commercial or recreational inboards.

The Cummins marine motors are very popular with the big slow boat crowd. The problem is the high hp motors that rev to 3800rpms are rated at only 320hp max. The 400-700hp motors are very heavy and rev to only 2300rpms tops. They are very durable and reliable as you would expect from Cummins.

For the high performance crowd, the Yanmar inline 6s are the only way to go. Yanmar builds them from 315hp to 480hp with a 530hp motor in the pipeline now. And from what I hear those hp numbers are low, very low from the actual dyno #s.

The 480hp motor revs to 3800rpms with a weight of less than 1700lbs. I know of a 36' catamaran with two 480s that is running almost 110mph. The Nortech boat company out of Ft. Myers Fl built a 50' cat with 4 480s at a weight of 18,000lbs that is running over 100mph now.

both the p-pumped cummins and the newer commin rail cummins engines have found there way into the marine aplications . they are out there so yes it could be done . there are some small differences to a marine 5.9 and the ones we use.

[QUOTE=dodgezilla04;1246936]6BTA5.9M1orM2meant marine 1 or 2 for keel cooler or jacket water heat exchanger mounted on the front of the engine.QUOTE]
This is what we use in several of our small craft out here. Our FRC (Fast Rescue Craft) uses a single with a Hamilton Jet Drive. It smokes along pretty good. I've been able to catch some air with it before in mid-sized swells. (I mean I've heard of this happening to people before) These are built in Alabama and similar too what the Coasties use.

Our LineBoats (Line Handling Boat) uses twins on a catamaran hull. They are an absolute pain in the butt to work on due to very narrow hulls. They are a pig for speed but have lots of grunt. We use these for hooking up tankers. Drag around the 19" mooring Hawsers and the 20" loading hoses. The Lineboats are only 9m long. They look pretty small next to a 2 million barrel tanker.

I was in the CG also and our RHI had a volvo but the other small boat commonly refered to as the floating bathtub had a 4bt in it. When I was in Boston the Storeroom had two big metal crates and a big C on the side. When I asked about them they were spare cummins motors for one of the boats but nobody knew which ones.

Halibut Boats

Spent many years in Alaska and still return every June and December. every june we go down to Homer and halibut/salmon fish and we book out on a boat owned by a guy who has a 46ft steel V hull. He told us one time it was powered with twin 375hp Cummins diesel engines and he bought the boat Washington State and ran it all the way up to Homer (hell of a long ways). If I remember right I think he said he burned like 1500 gallons and it took him 13 days.....also said it was one of the best trips he ever made.
