international 5.9!

i was driving around the other night and seen a diesel engine setting behind an auto garage, so i stopped to take a look it was international blue, six in a row, had a inline bosch injector pump, garrett turbo, non intercooled, and had engine tag said international navistar, 360, 5.9, 170 hp, had me confused, did cummins make it for international or did international make a 5.9 i know the owner of the shop and thinking about calling him to ask if he would sell it, just mainly for taking it apart and trying to learn

Lots of Internationals out there, along with medium duty fords and others, run teh 5.9, and many ran the p-pump.

International built an engine called the DT360, probably what you saw, similar in size to a 6bt. It has servicable liners, i don't know much more about them except that most people skip over them in favor of the DT466 which is similar, just larger, more powerful, and arguably the best diesel engine built (outside of the 6bt of course). It was a low cost engine used in their medium duty trucks (may still be built).

One of the military units I was in had a 5ton tractor with an IH inline 5.9. Probably the same motor you're talking about. We used it to pull a 40' trailer, and it pulled fine.

The DT-360 is 3.875" bore x 5.0625" stroke.
A DT-466 is 4.30" bore x 5.35" stroke.
The B series Cummins has a 102.1 mm bore and 119.9 mm stroke, which equates to 4.02" bore x 4.72" stroke

I believe the physical size is closer to the DT466 with the block being about 2" shorter.

There's alot of them still out there in service, but they do leave alot to be desired in a medium duty application. Reliable, but do lack in the power department.

The DT-360 was a smaller cousin to the DT-466 in the Melrose Park series of engines. IH had the 300 series "small block" engines that were 312 and 360 cubic inches and the "big blocks" that were 414, 436, 466 and later 530 cubic inches. The DT-360 was used in several models of farm tractors and was a good engine but it never saw the performance upgrades the DT-466 or the Cummins 5.9 saw.

i think it is out of a school bus the, garage owner drives and works on school buses, thats cool to know there are more than just 1, 5.9 out there, would the injector pump be pretty close tto the same as our trucks, it doesent have an afc housing, but looks like it has the 7/8 plug for gsk, it would be cool to get ahold of to take it apart to get a better understanding how our pump works,

International also had another 5.9L engine.
4.125" bore x 4.50" stroke, called the D361 and used in the 806/1206 tractors.
There's also a 358 cubic inch german diesel that was used in the 826 tractors.

The DT360 has the Bosch A-pump. It's almost identical to the P-pump inside(GSK, del valves, etc), except there's a fuel screw instead of a plate. The 360 sees a lot of use in school bussses, and lower budget MD trucks. These days they are in the tractor puller crowd. They are more robust than the Cummins 6BT, and can handle more power. It can fit in a pickup, if you know of some older trucks that need a repower. The good thing is that they arent in high demand, and you can pick them up for $1000, or even less.

I'd pay somebody $50 to come steal the DTA360 out of the '90 IH we have at work.

Is that so it can be replaced with a DT466? I'd gladly take it out, but that's a heck of a drive.

No, just so we don't have to drive the gutless noisy pig anymore.

Get some injectors from these guys, and an HX40, you'd be set. Have you adjusted the fuel screw yet? It makes a big difference, just like in the 6BT's.
