Okie ;D

Another interesting thing I learned some time ago about pump timing was to use a cetane increaser to see whether timing was correct or not. If you had more power with a higher cetane number it was time to advance timing. This does not help on extremely long injection cycles, but for the average engine it helped to take a lot of guesswork out.

AlpineRAM

Gary: A common misunderstanding in octane and cetane numbers:
Octane tells you the resistance against being ignited by heat and pressure, cetane tells you the willingness to ignite by heat and pressure.

So if you have a higher cetane number the fuel will ignite earlier in the compression stroke. (If there is already some in the cylinder) a lower cetane number will retard the timing.
There is a difference in timing of the start of the injection and the timing of the burn.

Re:Interesting comment on diesel fuel and injection pumps...

I remember reading somewhere that the gov't is trying to lower the sulphur content quite a bit more by 2007. I also remember reading somewhere that there was quite a surge of demand for new IPs after the last decrease, I guess it is sort of weeding out the additive users and non additive users.

I've always used Redline DFC (diesel fuel catalyst) in every tank of fuel ($35/gal, serves about 1200gallons) as it is an all in one additive. It lubes the IP, cleans injectors, reduces smoking, removes the same amount of water, a little antigel, and boosts cetane slightly. Almost does so much that it becomes unbelievable, in the winter I use two more additives.

Does anyone know what the lowest cetane a cummins should run on? I heard gravel trains and such run on 40, my MB requires 45, just wondering where the cummins comes in. Apparently pump cetane is normally around 42, super premium diesel is 50 cetane (different definitions of premium though).

Best I remember, Cummins calls for a cetane of 42. If I can, I'll scan the fuel specs and post them tomorrow.

shortround out

Here is a DFA that I am looking at. It is called Siloo. Anyone with any experience with it? A link about the product...Siloo. It claims to raise the cetane number by up to 8 points and is a lubricity/cleaner/booster product.

Not affiliated, just looking for input

Re:Interesting comment on diesel fuel and injection pumps...

As I stated in another thread, if you want higher cetane numbers and more lubricity you should look into adding a quite high percentage of biodiesel to your fuel. (about 5% at least)
Since the stuff is quite cheap (actually cheaper than standard over here) it does not increase fuel costs greatly per gallon treated.

AlpineRAM
