I'd like to cruise around a new truck somtimes, but thats something I gotta work for, so one day i'll get to that point. The CR cummins/48 combo seems to be pretty reliable. Lots of power to be had, and they run smooth to so thats gotta be nice when u got company in the truck. Check the 3rd gen sections for problems, but I don't think theres any major ongoing issues like the vp44.

Well, IMO, they definately don't sound as good as a 2nd gen.

But power wise, they are great and with just a Smarty alone are pretty awesome. Bone stock 04.5 on up with a Smarty will be over 450hp at the rear wheels. Brakes are awesome. Handling is good for an 8000lb vehicle.

Fuel mileage might be a little bit less than a 2nd gen.

Common complaints are the stock lift pumps, track bar issues, and A/C circulation issues.

The stock 48RE auto trans is good and will hold some power.

The CR's are probably a little better than 24 valve 2nd gens on reliability, but not that much. If you are happy with your trucks, then keep them and run them. IF you are in the mood for a newer truck, get a 3rd gen and don't look back.
