Whatever it is as soon as it starts the turbo starts winding up.

Oh and the uniform guy drives a panel van with a cummins in it. You can just tell by the sound. I think it's second gen. Sounds more like an '01 than '03 or newer.

My neighbor just retired as a mechanic from UPS. He told me not too long ago that there was a couple of different engines used, depending on the contract UPS had with who built the trucks for them. A few years ago, they had a bunch of trucks with International T444E engines in them (basically a Powerstroke). Evidently, they had some issues with them, and the newer trucks had Cummins ISB engines in them. He really liked the Cummins engine, easier to work on, more reliable, more fuel efficient. The latest trucks may have an International V8 in them (6.4L)? IIf the turbo sppoled up quickly, it probably was. I think that's somewhat characteristic of the powerstroke & Duramx engines. With alot shorter stroke, they rev up quicker, and thus spool the turbo up alot quicker. Where a Cummins B sereis has a comparitively long stroke, alot of low end torque, and doesn't rev quite as fast. Of course a smaller turbo on a Cummins would spool faster, but would be a real detriment to the mid and upper RPM ranges, so , of course, that's not how Cummins are set-up usually.

Man, most of our UPS trucks around here are switching to gassers.

They sound like straight sixes, dunno who still makes one though.

There's also a small number of hydraulic hybrid UPS trucks running around, with orders for over 4,000 more in the near future...

The UPS guy that delivers to my house most of the time thought it was a Mercedes-Benz. Any chance he's right?

For a time our UPS people had Dodge/Mercedes vans.

Back in the early 80's I drove a P800 "Package Car" (you did NOT call it a truck) Had a straight 6 gasser and a granny low 4 speed.

The one I'm seeing now is maybe P600 or P500 size and has this engine that I just don't think is a V8. All I can really tell is it's fairly peppy and the turbo spins up at idle.

He's always in such a hurry that I can't quite ask him to open the hood.

Actually - i think it's the VT 365 IH, or the well famed "6.0h-no!" If the turbo spools that quckly, it probably is, with thier Garrett VGT units.

I think the old I-6 gas units were Continential engines, perhaps the multi-fuel units as used in some "duce & a halfs?"

If it IS a V8 IH engine they must have learned some tricks. Because I don't see UPS rigs broke down very often.

I don't get V8 "vibes" off it. There doesn't seem to be THAT much room up there.

UPS must have a very good maintance program cause I've never seen one of their trucks broke down on the side of the road. I've been told that some of the UPS trucks are 20-30 years old, they run them till the wheels fall off then they put new wheels on them and keep running them.

ok i found out what they are using here in my area. its a freightliner chassic with a 215 hp cummins 6.7 and a 6 speed Allison(my guess is UPS doesnt want their drives to have too much power)
