It all depends on who has been drivin and what its been through. And I would want it stock, unless i knew the guy who had it before and knew how smart he was and how he drove it. I would want the service records and want to buy from someone who actually knows stuff about diesels.

I would definately trust a 12 valve with more miles than i would a 24 valve with more miles, the 12 valve has proven itself a long lasting motor many a time, and also the 12 valves have less moving parts meaning less wear and tear.

I am personally on the low side for a personal vehicle I wouldn't look at one over 100K on it. My truck I'll keep till near 200K though but that's because I know it's been taken care of.

If I was looking at an ex hotshot truck I'd look at the turbo and rear diff to see if they have got hot before, that should be a sign of how its been used. These trucks run at steady rpms if the driver is smart to keep mpg up and wear down.

If it was an around town work truck I'd look at a higher mile one though. I've thought about it for my business, getting a long bed cummins because my short bed doesn't work well. Vans actually suit me better though.... I can use my truck to just pull trailers.

For me it depends on the truck and how much I want it. Around here there aren't many 12 valve trucks left especially in the first gen flavor so you kinda have to take what you can get. 24s and CR are more common and for me less desireable, but I'd be more reluctant to buy anything with mods. Gauges are one thing, but programmers are quite another.

surprised to see all 24v haters

I find it very interesting to see guys throwin down a very reliable engine. Dont get me wrong the 12v is tough as nails but i am running a 01 ext cab with a super chip that i bought with 162,000 miles 4 yrs ago and now have 220,000 on it and it has been amazing and this is up in manitoba canada where it drives in -40c in the winters. I came across a 2001 3500 ext cab dually 6spd man with 538,000 miles it was in imaculate shape must have been a camper hauler. So i think a lil more credit must be given to the 24v !

I dont kn why ppl bash the 24valve so bad. another guy i work with swapped a 91 w250 for a 2000 ex 5speed service body with 300k on it. Put a vp on it never looked back that thing runs great. I have 06 with 155k miles really dont bother me at all on these things if you get it for the right price like 2500 bucks what does it matter if you have to do a inj pump for 1100 when you have a 9k truck

24 valve - wouldn't touch one at any mileage, I don't trust a VP44 any further than I can throw one.

Commonrail - 200k.
vp 44's are replaceable, depends on the price of the truck

I've owned every year of CTD from 89' through 04', all bought new except for the truck in my sig. that a good friend bought new and I traded him my 04' for his 01' with 100k on it

all are reliable trucks but all have their own issues/quirks

12v's kdp
24v's vp44/lift pump
5.9's piston problems
6.7's dfp issues

I don't understand the 24v negatives, except for the lift pump/vp44 issue I think it is the most trouble free CTD out there, just from my experience

a fass or some other good fueling system and a fuel gauge and no more problems, I've got 210k on it now and plan to keep running it every day

What do you mean by piston problems on teh 5.9s? What years does that apply to?

I've never heard of piston problems on the 3rd gen 5.9.

I think they have the best rep really. Not to say they didn't have piston problems but I have never heard of them.
