How many miles before using cruise control?

My 600 has just under 2800 miles on it. So far, it's been the first 1600 miles on highway and the rest my local mix (about 30/70 city/highway). I haven't used the cruise control except to make sure it works and for a few miles when there's a cop sitting on my tail. I know for break-in you're supposed to vary load and rpms, hence cruise control being bad. But how many miles should I go on this thing before giving my right foot a rest?

I have 3400 on mine and have used it plenty of times.

The speed varied widely the first 1500 because of the high traffic on the route I was on then but now all my highway miles are against the traffic.

So use it and don't worry about it.

Just hold off long enough to get from the dealership to the highway.

Ok, I'll use it on my 400 mile trip to Chicago and back tomorrow and set the cruise @ 70 mph. That should give a good indication of what kind of mileage this thing gets on the highway with the TSB 18-037-04

Thanks guys!

when i had 300 miles on the truck i went on a 1600 mile trip doing in the area of 70-80mph all using cruise control the entire trip in 1 night, 1 night of driving with cruise control 1600 miles traveled, was nice.

i doubt i ruined the engine.

Got 17.5 on the overhead and 17.55 calculated when I filled up. That was about 300 miles around town and 300 miles highway @ 70 mph. On the drive back it was reading 17.5 overhead cruising at 70... if that's true then I'm not all that happy. I was hoping for 20 mpg or so when cruising at 70 since I have a 4x2, 6-speed, and 3.73.

Maybe next time I'll set it at 85 and see what happens.

In order to get a mileage at the time you get o n the highway you need to reset it once you get up to speed. If you don't then it will only give you the avg mpg since the last reset. They took off the institaneous mpg function

When I changed my oil and fuel filter at 3800 miles, my over head was screwed up for about 2 full tanks, and it is still not where it was before I changed the oil and fuel filter, I can still go as far as I could before without having to fill up, so it appears to me that the sensor is in the fuel filter canister.

Take your truck back to the dealer and have the software update (re-flash) #18-037-04 done.

Check out a previous post of mine about this:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...hlight=1803704

I had it done and have picked up ~2 MPG.

It was free and only took a few minutes.

You may have to make an appointment.

Here is the link to the TSB, print it out and bring it with you to the dealer when you have it done:

http://www.dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/18-037-04.htm

And while your at it print this out and have it done at the same time:

http://www.dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/18-004-04.htm

You have to have the first one flashed first, then have the second one done(18-004-04).

The software for both is contained on the first one (18-037-04) and the second one is the procedure to enable the high-idle feature, which is a handy thing to have.

You'll be glad you did.
