How to get more power out of a DT466E

My boss has a 05 7300 series international. It has a DT466E mated to an allison 5spd i believe. It is rated at 220hp 540tq and empty does fine but when towing 20k its a gutless wonder and gets terrible mileage(4) He took it to the international dealer and international told them to turn it up he would have to put a new tranny in it. I call BS because the same exact truck in 06 had 300hp and 650tq. Can these new eletronic ones be turned up without the dealer or is there a dealer that will do it with the owner taking all the liablity. It will only have 10k miles a year put on it so he's not worried about blowing the tranny or wearing anything out. Any input or help would be greatly appreciated.

How to get more power out of a DT466E ?

Tear it out & replace with a proper motor, eg CUMMINS!

The 2006 may have derated in certain gears. You didn't mention the model of Allison but you need to keep it under its rating. Look up the model and specs on their website. I am guessing the GCVWR is pushing 30,000 and he should have gotten a bigger engine / trans combo. International lists it as have 11 and 13 liter options

The DT466 is every bit as good as anything Cummins ever offered in that class of engines and depending on the application usually better. Currently we are running five of the IH 400 series engines, a 24v 8.3 Cummins, a 12v 8.3, a 12 and 24v 5.9 and a Cat 3126 and my choice of the bunch would be the DT-466. All of our IH engines are older mechanical units, I understand the newer models aren't as reliable as the older ones.

Try TS Performance for a programmer. The tranny should hold up if you use the extra power wisely.

That power rating usually has the 1000 series tranny behind it, yup its the same one as in the D-max, it is not strong enough to handle any more torque reliably, looks like your I/H dealer is actually looking out for you.
Are you sure it is a 7300 and not a 4300?

Ya, it's probably a 2000 or 2400; same a 1000, but with a little lower gearing.

The 220hp most likely will have a 2000 series, the 300hp probably has a 3000 series, is it a push button shifter or the good ole t-handle? The strongest 2000 series isnt rated for much more than 300hp/570tq with a GCW of 33,000. So you probably could up the horse on it and be somewhat ok, but depending upon how you drive it may not last as long as desired.

Also depending upon how much of a increase in hp you want, they will have to change out the injectors and turbo.

I am tasked with maintaing quite a few 466s, and we havent had any major problems with the electronic ones. Just the high pressure fuel pumps that like to leak alot, cam sensors, and the stupid vgt turbos that they have yet to figure out, which I would have to say is the biggest downfall of them. We just got 4 new trucks with the Maxxforce DT engine in them so we will see how they go, you should see the giant 6 inch tail pipe on these things.

I've driven 7300s that were longnose for the 855 Cummins - the 7200s had Detroits. I thought I might want a DT466 someday so I did some homework on them. The pullers use the early 90s engines with P pumps but I didn't see that there's very much potential for the E engines. I've had several IHCs and they were all GUTLESS and not much to cure it unless they had Cummins. For me, I'd much rather have a C8.3 for potential and hotrod parts availability. Craig

There is way more performance stuff available for the DT-466 than for the 8.3, the 466 has pretty much ruled the tractor pulling circuit since the early '70s so there is a ton of aftermarket stuff for them that isn't available for the 8.3.
