Help! I think my CTD is more efficient than my Neon!

Can someone confirm to me my findings: Here are the last 2 measurements from the last fill ups in my vehicles- CTD- 104.35 in fuel, on 612 miles driven, (17.91 mpg) Neon- 32.12 in gasoline, 442 miles driven (37.45 mpg). If my math is correct, that would tell me that the truck only costs me 5.88 cents per mile, whereas my car costs me about 2x that, at 12.23 cents per mile. Am I doing that right? Just dosent seem right . Can some of you long haul drivers lead me in the right direction. Any help (or confirmation) would be appreciated

other way around. if the truck gets 17.91 mpg and the neon gets 37.45 mpg, obviously the neon is more economical. just say at $3 per gallon of diesel it costs you $.167 per mile($3/17.91mpg)
at $3/gal for gas it costs $.08 per mile($3/37.45) that only counts for prices that are the same. which they arent so..........I will use my local prices for comparison.
diesel $3.59/gallon divided by 17.91 mpg= $.20 per mile
gas $2.87/gallon divided by 37.45 mpg= $.076 per mile

the neon is cheaper to drive, but not as fun.

Ok, thanks, I knew I was dividing something wrong. And yes, whereas the neon is much cheaper to drive, it is a bit difficult to "smoke out" someone when you are driving a 2300 lb 4 cyl. 2 ltr gasser. Or look cool when a nice looking blonde pulls up alongside me. 18 mpg aint too shabby for a 7000 lb 4x4 truck. The CTD is worth every single penny- all 3,400,000 of them. BTW- gas was 3.03, #2 was 3.12

Looks like you were dividing the miles/$ rather than the othe way around. Using your numbers, the Cummins is around $0.17/mile and the Neon is around $0.07/mile.

Kinda off the subject, but related. Why is it that several years ago diesel was soooooo much cheaper than cheap gas. Seems like it has gone up to premium gas price in the last year or two? I have been paying 2.89 for diesel for the last two or so months, 3-4 months ago it was around 2.70-75, right around cheap gas price. I see several shops in town that are at 2.99/gallon of diesel and only 20 minutes from the place that's 2.89. Now, I go out and it's still 2.89 for diesel and cheap gas is 2.65?? Diesels as high as premium? What the gas companies see people are buying more diesels now for the excellent fuel efficiency and now they are gonna screw the pooch....the pooch being us? Again.....

Angry more expensive diesel

remember when unleaded first came out, (for us older people).
it was more expensive than leaded.
to answer the question, we are starting to see the new ultra low sulfur fuel prices.
and my opinion, we are getting screwed by the oil companies....

the main reason diesel is more expensive is because it is used more widely. Semi's and such so it benefits oil companies more to price it higher. which edit me off cuz out of every dollar of petroleum that is broken down inot different forms, it actually costs them more to make gas than it does diesel. they are making like a 400% profit on diesel. ok i might be over exagerating but that just aint right in my eye.
