BMW eliminated the throttle by adjusting lift of the intake valves and do timing by offsetting the cam in their new gassers. They stated that the technology of individual direct valve actuators is there but in terms of fuel efficiency theirs is better. With a cam you can recover the energy stored in the valve spring when closing the valve, with these actuators you can't.

Yes, you are right. They are unit injectors (cam driven). The ISX (version of the Signature 600) is a DOHC design.
Scaling down this model for the Dodges? I would like to see that.
BTW..The agreement with Cummins being Volvos major engine supplier for there ISX engines is nearing an end. And, just in time to show off Volvos new D16C engine. It is an in-line six-cylinder with a displacement of 16.1 litres, available with a choice of two power outputs, 610 and 550 horsepower. This may have been the engine that your brother was talking about.
As far as a camless engine..CAT has expressed interest in this. I wouldnt be suprised if we dont see this design in the near future.

You're right. The easy way to get high injection pressures is to use a cam to actuate, but use a solenoid to time/meter the fuel. This isn't likely to change for a while, and I would hazard a guess that the engine seen had cam-actuated injectors.

Yeah the ISX has a dual cam, as far as an engine that powerful, possible. But From what i heard at a local fleet that uses kenworth( which has nuttin to do with this haha) that these engines might not be far off and are possible today if the manufatures wanted too, But one design they have to meet the 2009 standards is a Hydraulic drive, Using a smaller engine to run hydos to power the truck. Also using the same hydo to cylinders to stop the truck, making them into pumps themselfs and storing pressure in a tank and then using that pressure to also start the truck from a stand still. Sounds pretty promising. make mechanics jobs though!

Anybody old enough to remember the Chrysler turbine at the 1964 World Fair in NYC? My recollection was that it sounded like an APU found in the tails of commercial aircraft.

EGTs on GTCs (Gas Turbine Compressors) are mild when compared to our standards. Most of our units today operate in the 1100-1200 degree range. Unfortunately they don't make any torque, so you have to rev 'em 50,000 rpms to make 100 hp.

I remember the exhaust being a problem but I also rememebr them standing a nickel on edge on the engine while it was running. Cool..... Talk about turbo whine.......

The F1 cars use a pneumatic valvetrain system, where air pressure both opens and closes the valve. At least I think so.
I would personally like to see if there's a way that the piston internal combustion engines in traditional configurations could use ROTARY valves. When it comes to efficiency, reciprocating is bad...rotating is good.
What if you had rotary valves all driven off little chains on the top of the head. If each valve had its own chain or something, you would have infinetely variable timing and duration.
Not to mention, no worry of grenading an engine from dropping a valve.
There's simply GOTTA be a better way to do things.....
