General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

It says it has low resistance spark plug wires...

also say they have larger cylinder bores. once again they have to up the displacement to keep up.

Aluminum heads on a diesel seems a little cooky. I had aluminum Edelbrock heads on my old Ramcharger and they gave me nothing but headaches, and this was a gasser. Maybe I am just overly leary about aluminum, what's your guys/gals oppinion on it?

the larger bores change the emissions. dont remember exactly how the relationship works but.....

You need the spark plugs to get the 1000hp from running it on alcohol.

Yeah I was looking at the allison, 3.1 to 1.8 seems steep. Maybe it should be a 2.2 or 2.3 then a 1.7 and so forth. 1550rpm freeway cruising sounds nice.

Aluminum heads warp on gasoline engines with cast iron blocks worse than they do on diesels with cast iron blocks, true or false?
Could be. The warping aluminum heads is caused by differences in heat dissipation, iron cools slower than aluminum. So the heads cool quicker than the block. Since operating temps are cooler in a diesel, warping may not be a problem. But I wonder, do older Duramax's have leaky head gaskets? Maybe some do, because the new diesel gets reduced compression pressure too I notice.

My dad was a VW mechanic for years and we drove the diesel rabbits. They had an aluminum head. I do remember him saying they couldn't take being overheated very well, like when the thermostat stuck. I had one do this and it got hot quick before I notice it and it warped the head on it even though I pulled over as soon as I saw it. If they were'nt warped too badly you could have the head shaved and it would take care of it. Seams like they even offered a thicker head gasket to compensate for some of the shaving so the compression increase wouldn't cause problems. I'm not sure this is usefull information to you but my only experience with them. You know at 53 miles to the gallon you could still come out Ok if you had to pull and shave the head you just could'nt get any where in a hurry, they were so weak and slow it would drive you crazy trying to pull much of a hill LCH

A year from now, I wonder if there will be more negative posts about this improved engine or this improved transmission.
