Hard Starting 7.3L Powerjoke
My buddy has a 1992 Ford 250 NON-TURBOCHARGED 7.3 liter powerstroke. when it is cold or been sitting over 2 hours, it takes a little while to start cranking and cranking, but when warm/hot, it fires right up. I am stumped i am not a specialist on Powerstrokes so i though some one on here might be. It has a lift pump like an old Chevy V8. the injection pump is righ on top. i dont know what is going on. at idle sitting there, it smokes blue/white, when you mash it from idle in park it blows a huge cloud of white/blue smoke, but it did that for a while. now it dont start and we hope it aint the injection pump. if anyone knows please chime in.
BTW he is too cheap to replace with Cummins, already tried persuedeing him.

Well to begin with
its not a powerstroke, its an Indirect Inject, and from what you are saying, it seems to me that his injection pump has hit the gutter, A simple test to see for the injector pump, crack the lines and see if you get any fuel to it, when these truck hard start it can be the injector pump,
or any of these.. I had one i know
Glow plugs, how new are they? or how old are they?
Glow plug relay, has it been replaced?
Glow plug connecting ends, are they corroded?
Batteries, do they hold a charge? IT IS A MUST on these IDIs
Alternator good?
Return lines, are they good? slit? leaks anywhere at teh plastic bases on the injectors?
Ur tellin me it starts well when it is warm, that right there, eliminates batteries, and possible alternator, seems to me if your problem isnt with the glow plugs, replace the lift pump at the bottom, one from a 460 ford works just as well, and its a piece of cake to replace.. If that fails, check the lines at the injectors, if one or more is not throwin fuel, its most likely your IP, these last about 100K or so on average on these trucks, so if its the original, and ur over 150K miles on that truck, id say u need an IP...
Tx
ALSO IP's on this truck are cheap 450 for a good stanadyne one, not tough to replace either, just tricky,

one more thing to check would be a power drain when it sits. if the starter is spinning slow it will have a hard time starting.one way to check is to put a set of jumper cables on it and see if it fires up right away, also check the glow plug relay and controler
