Grand Cherokee and Dodge 1500 Diesels

I don't know if this has been talked about or not, but in the new (November) issue of 4wheel and offroad in the Drivelines section, there is some info on Grand Cherokees and light duty trucks with diesels. It says:

"the '09 Grand Cherokee will recieve Chrysler's Bluetec diesel technology, making it 50 state legal. The company will explore "additional penetration" of its 3.0L v-6 common-rail diesel engine currently available in the Grand Cherokee, as well as the "possiblilty of a 4 cylinder diesel for the North American market."

"An all new Cummins turbodiesel engine will be available in light-duty pickups after 2009. The new engine, says Chrysler, will provide up to 30 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 20 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emmissions compared to an equivalent gasoline engine."

Benz leaves in 09, making the 08 GC an orphan.

No chance of the 4BT going in, perhaps they have been listening to me complain and they will slap the little 4 cyl MB Bluetec in something.

Don't lay all your money that the 1500 will be only a V-8 either, last I heard the V-6 little brother was what was going in Dakota and GC.

Last I read, the sales couldn't keep up with the Liberty Diesel. Hardly a flop from the reports I came across. I keep hoping they release a 4 cylinder Cummins again. I also just looked at a new 2008 and although kind of Nitro'ish its pretty nice looking. I still prefer the old body style. No word however on a 4 cyl. engine from what I've found though. (As for the 4bt, isn't that an old design? let alone a fairly large four cylinder)

As for the GC, its a Mercedes diesel now and more than likely its only going to be there for 2007 and 2008. The new Cummins factory is producing V8 and V6 diesels. Once production gets moving you should start seeing them in vehicles shortly after, specifically the 1500's. (Id avoid the GC's for now since they are a premium price for a premium drive train.)

No word yet as far as the Cummins being placed in anything else just yet. More than likely they will become somewhat standard throughout all the lineups.

Have a good one.

Read the new issue of HUNTER Magazine! It has the infor on the new 5.6l Cummins V8 Diesel and the new V6. Both are putting out over 400lb-ft of tq and the V8 is at 300+ HP. They say that in test mules they are seeing 25+ MPG out of the 1500 Rams and 27/28 out of the V6 Durango's!! Looking forward to these new Trucks. Just might have to trade back up for a 1500!--------naaa, I'll just but the new Tacoma Diesel that will be here in 2010! JB

If they offer the V-6 in a 1500 however....

Who am I trying to kid? My '03 has to last a loooong time.

There are several Liberty's sitting around on lots down here marked down and the salesmen @ the local dealership have told me that they have not sold very well.

Now if they'd just offer a diesel in a Wrangler, with the lifetime powertrain warranty.... Hmmm......

We love our Jeep CRD, it's been perfect in the last 6000 miles. Mileage is ok, normally we get 20, but on our last road trip we got 23.7, 26.5, and 25.0 mpg. Little sucker makes all it's torque at 1600 rpm, and the trans is awesome, locks the converter in at least 2nd gear, real solid. Gearing is a bit low, runs 2600 rpm at 70. But we are fixin to lift it 2.5" and put a little bigger tire on it.

With all that I've seen on the new 6.7, I'd rather have the little benz than a little cummins.
