GM starts the battle of the light duty diesel

Just got my Diesel Power today and GM has announced that it has produced a 4.5L V-8 for its 1/2 pickups for the 2009-2010 model years. Rated power is supposed to be at 340HP and 590TQ. It is also supposed to meet 50 state requirments. Going to be a big fight in the Big 3 next few years.

Probably because everyone is buying big honkin trailer pullin diesels and using them as mall cruisers . I say good for the big 3 on noticing this.

When I bought my truck Cummins out numbered 1500 gassers 3 to 1 at the dealership.

It's probably going to be a gutless lightweight. I'd like to see more competition in diesel SUV's. AFAIK the only one available is the Jeep Liberty and it's nothing to write home about.

Well I doubt they will meet emissions and make those numbers... The v-8 of Cummins is supposed to be 5.4L and only put out something like 230/520. Chevy's probably just boasting big numbers to get attention

yeah all three companies are coming out with diesel in 1/2 tons and even some SUV's...I just don't understand the need to make those motors so big and overpowered...I've also heard some pathetic mpg advertisements...I read somewhere 26mpg highway??? thats pathetic!,,,In a small 1/2 give me a 3.5 V6 diesel that gives 160hp and somehting like 350lb torque and give me 32-35mpg and I'll line up at the dealership like it was Star wars part 1

I think we'll see fewer and fewer gasoline powered trucks being made in years to come for sure. The problem with the 1/2 ton diesel truck is still the fact that its a half ton. You'll see all these guys buying 1/2 tons because they are cheaper and still getting a huge camper to pull.Gonna make for some fast trucks for sure though

Something just doesn't add up.... displacement of 4.5L and power ratings that rival the current engines in the 3/4+ trucks. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't take large displacements to make big power but how are they squeezing those numbers into 2010 emissions standards??

...and I wouldn't say GM is starting anything. Cummins announced their light-duty diesels last year and then announced they would be going into Dodge vehicles in the corresponding fall.

I heard they discontinued the 2007 CRD due to emissions restrictions.

Ya, figure that out.. But they still make the Escalade or Avalanche with the 8.1L gasser that gets 8 mpg...

Well, the MB C220 with the 4 Cyl TDI, which should be roughly the same weight gets 42 MPG.

Not a crazy idea at all, well unless you are one of those fancy degreed marketing geniuses at DC. << Sarcasm mode off>>

The Grand Cherokee is currently being offered with a MB V-6 TDI. My local dealer is currently having 2 built. For 09 they will be offering the Cummins v-6

That was my first thought. I call BS on those GM numbers.....

I'd really like to see a <4.0L 6 cylinder diesel for medium sized SUVs offered. Looks like we'll be getting a Hummer H3 this fall and a small diesel would be ideal in that ride.
