Mikey, just read a synopsis of Deep Hot Biosphere at http://people.cornell.edu/pages/tg21/DHB.html interesting theory, but it's just that, a theory, and most likely not very widely accepted. One thing that proves it wrong is any introductory book on petroleum geology. There will be discussion of things like biomarkers, and how different oils can be linked to particular source rocks by biochemical traces. Different oils have different organic sources, petroleum derived from terrestrial plants have a different composition to those from marine plankton, they differ from those derived from lake algae, etc. and they have been differentiated for quite some time.

Peak oil is more than just a theory, it's well proven. Even with the Deep Hot Biosphere idea it seems like it would take thousands of years to create enough oil to amount to much.
Like the article said, anyone middle aged or younger is going to see the end of cheap oil in their lifetime even with the best case scenario.

Be careful on an older truck it will stir up all the crud in the tank and fuel lines from what I have read, so carry an extra fuel filter with you.

How 'bout 2.08 to 2.15 here- around Carson City. Smith's grocery store, the cheapest, just went over 2.00 today. Ours comes from California so we get it stuck in and broken off just like them. Jim

$3.00/gal for biodiesel? What would be the advantage of using that? Do you get better mileage out of it?

$1.64 this morning at the local Walmart and same price at Ft Knox. Supposed to be jumping about 20 -25 cents later this week.

Gas was 1.69, 1.79, and 1.89 for the three grades.

The oil companies are the biggest crooks on the face of the planet. THey have us by the short hairs and they know it. Not much you can do but pay and gripe.

I hate to see the Govt intervine on any issue. But oil company greed is outrageous and it is time for the govt to put the brakes on.

I strongly disagree. For the most part, the higher prices are due to government intervention through aggressive and "politically correct" EPA regulations. There are 1/3 fewer refineries in North America now than 15 years ago due to the ever-rising costs of compliance with these progressively constricting regs. The refineries here have spent billions of $$ in compliance and more than ever will soon be required with the ban of MTBE in the near future. The producers of distillates (gasoline, kero, and diesel) imported to this country are stretched too thin at this point to comply with the newest regulations imposed by the EPA. This has created some of the lowest inventories of distillates experienced here for the last several years. Remember, our economy centers around SUPPLY AND DEMAND. The DEMAND

Anytime you see diesel at the same cost or more than gasoline you are getting ripped. Do not care where you live, that is a fact jack.

Now the next big hit on diesel is going to be when ULSD hits the streets and the excuse will be refining costs (hydrotreating) to lower the sulphur content 95%.

Well, I was low on diesel so I decided to stop at my usual place on my way home. I thought I was seeing things. It went from 1.59 to 1.69 in about a weeks time. Diesel there was also 1 cent more expensive than the low grade gasoline. Needless to say, I didnt fill up there. And wont ever again.

And here's another thing. This station was a Citgo. I decided to drive on into McKinney to another place, which happens to be a Citgo as well. Price for diesel there was 1.63. How can the price of diesel vary THAT much from the same company?

Diesel might cost more than gas in some places because of supply and demand. More demand and low supply for diesel will drive the price up.

It definitely costs less to refine diesel fuel than to refine gas.

There are two ways to make a million dollars.

A: Charge one million people 1 dollar.

B: Charge one person one million dollars.

It's a difference in business stratagy at the individual station.
