Fuel Mileage and acceleration

OK, I have had this diesel for almost 2 years but I have a silly question.

Upon acceleration is it better with a diesel to slowly work up to speed? Or is it better to get up to speed more quickly? (not flooring it just more pedal). With slow acceleration it just sounds like the truck is actually working harder. Just wondering if something in my driving techique could improve my mileage.

Thanks

Good question! The reason for getting up to speed quickly is to get into the highest gear quickly. But I'll be looking for other replies from the other dieselheads here.

I'm not sure I like to accelerate quickly, but that is just because I like the feeling of acceleration. I would think that the harder you excellerate the more the fuel it would use while getting up to speed.

I keep my RPMs around 2k when accelerating normally. IMHO the lighter the pedal the better the economy. Just my opinion.

But if you want justification for punching it.. then ah.. yah.. more pedal does give you better economy ........... on time.

When accelerating up to speed or at crusing speed watch the boost. More boost is more fuel it take fuel to make boost. With my truck at 60 mph I run down the road at 6-8 psi of boost but at 75 mph I see more like 12-15 psi and the fuel mileage shows it.

I have the overhead that gives you the instant guesstimation on MPG,
and flooring it gets under 5mpg, but slowly rolling in gets around 10.

Take that as you will.

I experimented with this for several months and found that keeping under 2k and under 10lbs of boost I average 18mpg locally. When I let the boost climb over 10lbs and still kept to 2k mileage dropped to 16.5 - 17. It was more fun though.

I hit 40PSI of boost every time I accelerate, to almost any speed
J/K.

This ONE TIME I kept the R's under 2k for a full tank of fuel.. About killed me My leg was sore from holding back from pinning the accelerator to the floor
Ended up with 15MPG, around town mostly short trips! Not too bad for a truck with 4.10 gears.

There is a point that you spend so much more time accelerating that you eat more then getting on it some. It is a major part of having a stock auto. A lock-up comp will fix that problem. Then just keep the map below 8 PSI.

I've found that givin it the juice up to 45 -50 mpg where my auto locks up improves my milage in town driving by about 3 mpg. I tested it myself on two weeks going to work. I doubt you would notice it city driving or highway cuz one is always accelerating and the other is always cruising.

Well, I'm glad to get 14 MPG around town unloaded with a stock truck, 727 thee-speed and 3.07 rear end gears.

But that's hitting 15 PSI off of every stop light.

I haven't been able to keep it under 10 PSI for a full tank (or a full day) yet.
