Ford Rules...Nuff said...

However, for my next truck I am thinking about a Dodge. ;D

The reason a couple of my buddies have purchased new cummins HO and love them. The big factor is they are buying them for up to $5,000 less than I can find the equivalent FOMCO PSD 6.0L. Fact someone saved even more than $5K. Also, the mixed reviews of the 6.0L has me wanting to hold off for awhile. Can you Dodge/Cummins experts answer a few questions for me:

1) Does the 3500 come in a long bed SRW 4WD?

2) The warranty says 7 year 70,000 on power train. Is this engine and auto trans? Also, why doesn't GM and Ford give 100,000 warrantees on the engine? This should not be a problem for me because I put about 10,000 a year on my vehicle and after 7 years I will want something new anyway.

3) I haul a camper...what is the GVWR of the 3500 SRW 4WD (if Dodge makes one)? Also, what is the weight of this vehicle? I want do the math and see how far over or under GVWR I will be with my camper.

4) I noticed my buddies 2004 HO came with Michelin tires. Are these the same M/S or A/S load range E tires I get on the Ford? Also, what size are the wheels 16 or 17? It was dark/rainy when I saw his truck and did not want to crawl under it...

5) Anyone hauling a big camper with their dodge? How does it handle?

6) Transmission. Ford automajic transmission sux, I have heard dodge slush box transmissions are equally as bad. I have also heard they have a new design for 2003/2004? Are these better? Are they 4 or 5 speed autos? Does it matter if it's four or five speed?

7) Exhaust brake? I have driven a few fords (7.3L) with and without the exhaust brake. It was lot nicer with the exhaust brake. Can you install and exhaust brake on a new HO Cummins? Does it void the warranty or anything stupid like that?

Thanks!
Softy

I dont know warranty for the ford company, but Chevy and dodge have the 100,000 warranty. I even paid 1200 more for a 7, 70,000 bumper to bumper. Great deal. 120.00 down and 60 a month so it comes out nice for me.

Any diesel you get will do you a great job. Thing is to like it all the time.

I may not have all the answers, but I will take a shot at most of them and i'm sure others will chime in:

1)I believe so. I have definitely seen a quad cab short bed 3500 SRW.

2) Yes, the engine, tranny, and transfer case are all covered by the 7yr/70K warranty. The Cummins engine has a seperate 5yr/100K warranty through Cummins.

3) Not sure on the weight ratings for the 3500 off the top of my head.

4) The rims are 17" because the brake rotors are 13.9" and the 17" rim is the smallest size that would clear the brake hardware. My rig came with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail 265/70/17 E Rated tires, but some people's came with Michelins.

5) I don't haul a camper, but there are many forum members on here who regularly tow a 5th wheel camper with no issues.

6) I opted for the 6spd manual, so I couldn't tell you about the reliability of the automatic. Most people with the newer automatic 48RE seem to like it though. I test drove an automatic and decided that the 6spd was a much better decision for me.

7) You can install an Exhaust brake on HOs with Manual Transmissions only as far as I know. They are still developing ones for the autos I believe.

Hope this helps you out a bit.

DC is having some tranny issues with the E Brake and the auto. Thrust washers wearing. This is from Jacob themselves. If you want an E brake get a 6spd.

Doesn't dodge have the largest towing capacity of all?? I am pretty sure they do! Plus the 5.9L Cummins is a medium duty engine where as the duramax and PSD are light duty engines! I have heard good things about the new dodge Autos i have driven one and it felt solid to me however no exhaust brake on the autos just yet!

Re:Ford Rules...Nuff said...

1. yes you can get a 3500 srw pickup long and short quad cab. there are no 3500 srw reg cab trucks.

2. I believe all 3 mfg give 100,000 mi on diesel engines. dodge gives more on drive train.

3. depends on your configuration...
srw gvw is 9900 lbs. the dooly has a greater gvw
gcvw is 21000 or 23000 depending on rear axel and tranny options.

4. as stated before they are 17 in rims...

5. no I don't...

6. stick with the 6 speed

7. dodge does warranty the engine to be used with an exhaust brake on the 6 speed only at this time. dodge doesn't warranty the auto at this time. sometime in the new year it is supposed to be warranted...

Think about this, CUMMINS owners don't have glow plugs that go out, we have grid heaters. You don't have to worry about adding fw-16 coolant additive for possible cavitation in the engine block. Bell housing leaks, cold start romp, white smoke and a few other minor problems. I hear the Ford runs good when you get a good engine without problems. Don't know much about D-Max. Alot of Ford owners are ticked off about there problems. I myself have seen quiet a few being hauled to the dealership because they have left there owners stranded. Not saying Dodge or Chevy don't have there problems. Drive them all see what you like and what will work for you. Mine threw a code took it to dealer they fixed it and it has been perfect since then.
Look at WWW.TheDieselstop.Com read what them folks say.

All popular trucks have to rule something... While pulling heavy up a hill, Dodge rules the front door, Ford rules the back door. I am tickled pink whenever I pass a 6.0. In a truth and honesty, when the 6.0 first came out the new owners hauling cars were all bragging about how great it was, I don't hear that much now. Even a friend that is a true die hard Ford lover, said when asked how the truck is,
"ahh runs good, a few problems, misses some at idle, studders some on takeoff, darn dealer can't find the problem." Down the road they will probably work the bugs out but they have a few issues at this time. Being honest also, I now and then run into Duramax owners hauling, and have not gotten any negative comments. They do love the Allison.
