Ford F650 (It has a Cummins)

I recently bought a 2000 Ford F650 box truck that has a 5.9 Cummins and an Allison auto trans. This thing is severely castrated.

Is there anything relatively cheap that a guy could do to get some more power out of this pig? I couldn't even hold 70 on a slight hill with my foot flat on the floor and an empty box.

Ford has a long list of power levels for the 5.9, anywhere from less than 200 to 350 hp. I would think there would be something you could do to up the power. Possibly a visit to a Cummins/Fleetguard facility would be a good place to start.

By IP, do you mean HP? I'm not sure. I just got it home Saturday and have been busy with other things.

that has a vp44 on it. It comes in 175-250hp range. First thing I would do is get rid of the 3" down pipe, and change the turbo exhaust housing to fit a 4" down pipe. I don't remember the cm size.

Does it have a rating on the engine plate? Have you checked fuel and air filters?

The data plate says 190 HP @ 2500 RPMs. That explains that. Ford tells me sometimes they can turn it up by reprogramming the computer. If the ECM needs to be flashed, it has to go to Cummins.

I went to check the oil and the dip stick tube broke off in the block. Of course Ford doesn't sell just the tube. You have to buy the dip stick with it for about $98. What a racket.

If you have your engine serial number, check with Cummins for the dipstick.

I'm sure Cummins will break it off in me too, probably for more than Ford did.

Doubt it.

Through Dodge the heater block cord was 50-75 bucks depending on which Dealer, through Cummins it was 11 bucks.
