Why are used truck Prices so high now??
Why are used truck Prices so high now??
Well, i have been on the search for a clean 2nd gen xcab 12v or 24v. Seems as though any truck that catches my interest is upwards of 16-20K dollars. Same goes with the Duramax as well (or more). I dont know why this is so, when i purchased my 01 back in 2003 i paid 22K for it with only 22K miles on it. Seems like all the trucks that i am looking at have well over 100K miles on them and they still want 16-20K for them. I dont know if this is just in my area or if it is like this around the country. Dont get me wrong, you can still get trucks cheap that are rough around the edges ect but thats not what i want. I was really interested in an 01 Dually with 93K miles on it, 4x4 6spd leather ect ect, had a few aftermarket items such as exhuast intake, just the basics. Well the asking price was 17K which was a little high i thought, but it was a real nice clean well taken care of truck. I probably could have gotten the truck for less money, but before i made the guy an offer, i called a couple of banks that i deal with to ask them about a loan, and both banks only booked the truck out at 12,200~14,000. I dont mind throwing cash on top of what the bank would give me for a loan, but alot of these truck are way over book value. Just curious what other peoples thoughts are and if they notice the same thing. Thanks
Be very wary about "book" prices! They vary GREATLY. It's an old used carsale's man trick to off Book price to book price. They offer you KBB trade-in (usually much lower than the other "books") and then sell you a car using the NADA Retail "book" price. NADA is usually the highest of all the books.
Right, my bank used NADA, i think the one used private party value and the other used NADA retail value which is why there is a difference. I have seen a truck on Ebay that is an 01 or 02 with only 20 something thousand miles on it and the guy has a buy it now price of 25K. To me i think a truck like that would be worth upper teens in price, deff not 25K. Yeah its rare to find a truck of that year with that few miles on it, but again still way over priced. There is also a 02 dmax crew cab 4x4 with less then 10K miles on it and the guy is asking 19K for it which is a bit more reasonable, but still a little high i think. I dont know what to think, prices are all across the board it seems where as the gas jobby truck all seem to be in the same ball park price wise, (not that i am going to buy one)

All the major car/truck value books give you (3) separate "values". Trade In, Private Party and Retail. These "values" are NOT cut in stone like a LOT of people would like to believe.
Here's different "Book" values On-Line.
www.NADA.com
www.Edmunds.com
www.KBB.com
and I'm sure there are more.
Do Research on your vehicles from ALL 3 of the "Value" sites and see what you get.
I believe it's Edmunds that GROSSLY under rates the Cummins Diesel engine option. IRRC, the only at like $2,500 across the board. The other sites ADD like $5,000 or more! HUGE DIFFERENCE!
Anyways, to obtain a value, one must consider many different sources. EBay, old Auction prices (BTW, Dealer only software program), Autotrader and On-Line Classifieds.
Another thing to consider is a Specialty market like Diesel pickups. This market is totally different than those "Gassers" out there!
Getting a "value" is not so cut and dry. Kind of a PITA if you ask me.

So now when someone says "The BOOK value is....." You can reply back WHICH Book value did you use ?
We all know something is only worth what another person is "WILLING" to pay.
Recently spoke to a friend of mine that is a used car salesman. He said even at the auctions the Dodge trucks are selling $2-$3k higer than just a couple of months ago and the diesels are even higher. He was asking me if I knew anything about the reasoning, but I just figured everyone finally figured it out that the Cummins is the way to go.
I sold my '01 with 123k miles and about $4k in go fast goodies,1 year ago for $16.5k and thought that was good, but now you can barely buy a stocker for that much with the same miles on it.

He said he can keep Dodge Rams (and other Fullsized Pick ups on the lot). Diesels don't stay on his lot either.
I'm thinking it's mainly due to the drop in fuel prices from last year.
Yea, when I bought mine a couple of years ago, I was looking at the Ford 7.3 and the Cummins, narrowed it down to 2 trucks (1 from each), I paid 2K more for the Cummins with the same mileage, but the Ford was 2 years newer.
Go where the trucks are.... Texas is #1 but southern states are all good.
I know it's harder but the benefits are there.... lower prices and no rust!
Try Autotrader.com for areas outside yours. My guess is much better pricing.

The same thing, is happening, with farm tractors. My cousin has been looking for a 150 H P travtor, and he says he should have bought a couple of months ago, becaust the price has went up as much as 10,000 dollars, and that is for any brand.
