Ford/commins and Dodge/Mercedes
- GM has owned part of Isuzu since sometime in the 1970s. They took a controlling interest in the 1990s when Japanese foreign-ownership laws were slightly relaxed.
- Ford *once* owned approximately 5% of Cummins. This was divested shortly after the first Cummins/Chrysler contract was put together.
- Ford has never owned British Leyland -- the British government owned British Leyland until it was privatized in the 1980s. Ford bought Jaguar in 1989 and Land Rover (from BMW, who had by then bought the Rover Group, lost their shorts, and was divesting themselves of all of it save MINI) in 2001 or 2002.
- Daimler-Benz (now DaimlerChrysler) bought a controlling interest in Freightliner in the late '80s. They now own pretty much all of it after buying Penske's stake in the early '90s.
- DaimlerChrysler bought DetroitDiesel from Penske in roughly 2000. Penske had bought DDC from GM in the late '80s and turned it from a major money-loser into a profitable venture.
- Subaru/Fuji Heavy Industries was bought into by GM in the late '90s.
Here's a rundown of the major players, aka "Who Owns Whom":
Ford: Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Mazda (controlling interest), Volvo Cars (not Volvo Truck), Cosworth Racing
GM: Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Hummer (marketing arrangement with AM General), Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, Saab, Isuzu (controlling interest), Daewoo, Suzuki (marketing/distribution arrangement), Allison Transmission
DaimlerChrysler: Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Unimog, Freightliner, Thomas-Built, American LaFrance, Detroit Diesel, Mitsubishi (controlling interest, but just announced it will be disbursed as soon as they can find a buyer for it), Hyundai (through Mitsubishi), Kia (via Hyundia and Mitsubishi), Ssayngyong (via Hyundai and Mitsubishi), Ilmor Engineering, McLaren (partial interest)
Volkswagen: Volkswagen, Audi, Bugatti, Lamborghini (via Audi), Cosworth Engineering (via Audi), Bentley, Skoda, SEAT
BMW: BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, Williams Formula One (partial interest)
Renault: Renault, Nissan
PSA: Peugeot, Citroen
FIAT: FIAT, Lancia, Ferrari, Maserati, ALFA Romeo
Toyota: Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Daihatsu, and chunks of Nippondenso, Aisin-Seiki, Yamaha, and several other suppliers
Honda: Honda, Acura
Proton (Malaysia): Proton, Lotus
Volvo Truck: Volvo Truck, and I *think* they bought Scania when GM bought Saab
PACCAR: Kenworth, Peterbuilt
Caterpillar: Caterpillar
International Truck & Engine Corporation: International
Cummins: Cummins
Phoenix: MG Rover Group (bought from BMW at the fire-sale price of One Pound Sterling), have since bought remains of DeTomaso/Qvale and folded into MG brand
This is by no means an all-inclusive list. I don't have that issue of Ward's Auto World handy, and the online version is subscription-only, so I can't post a working link.

Im loyal dodge, as long as we cant screw someting up like ford does with the Powerstroke ill be happy. I mean, We see quiet a few DT466(The Powerstroke) at work( Great Plains International) And they have a good hefty miles on them. of course i was just replacing the injectors and glow plugs on one with 240k haha. but some are in the 500s, however the 2nd to last batch of fed ex trucks that were bought in 98 or 99 had the cummins in them and there going strong yet with 800some, but i have no idea on what they had done to those as ive only been around a few months But im sure that there are powerstrokers out their with that as well, i just havent seen them
