f700 cummins

i just bought a '93 f700 with a cummins. i think its a 5.9 but havent checked yet as its pouring rain here all day. need a little more power on the passes as the truck weighs 22k gross. i only went 35 mph over the passes when i was bringing it home. should i just read in the 12v section? it has a 5&2 tranny and it turned 2500 at 65 mph.

I'd bet it's the 5.9, that truck is a little small for a C-series.

Figure out which pump you have first. If it's an inline (row of injection lines coming out the top of the pump) read in the 2nd gen section. If it's a rotary, read in the 1st gen section.

You will need to be more conservative when turning up a medium duty truck than you are when turning up a pickup. We get away with a lot of spooky stuff in the pickups because we don't ask for full power very often. In a medium duty you might as well have an on/off switch instead of an accelerator - if it's not idling, it's floored. Keep the timing low and move plenty of air.

A higher rpm governor will help you tremendously. Fueling to 3k will get you over the hills faster by itself - and it's easier on the motor than just adding more fuel.

Order a 3k GSK and a pyrometer and start reading about fuel plates while you're waiting on parts.

Do what you can with the exhaust, like upgrading to a 5" muffler and tailpipe. I would not try running straight piped, it will be really obnoxious due to the continuous heavy load and high RPM. The air intake is usually pretty good stock, if you find something bigger make sure you retain the cold air intake, don't draw air from under the hood.
