Exhaust Sound Question

Just had the local muffler shop put on my new stainless tip. However, I'm not real please with the way they went about doing it.

Instead of cutting the tailpipe and clamping the tip on, the decided to cut the tip, slip it over the tailpipe, and then weld it on.

I didn't expect a tip to alter my sound much. I made sure I got just a plain stainless tip with no muffle devices in it or anything. However, my truck seems quite a bit quieter since this installation (which is a bad thing for me).

When they slid the tip on, they left the tailpipe as-is. The tailpipe is about half way inside of the tip with a lot of space around it... is this having a muffling effect? Or are my ears just playing tricks on me?

might be quieter inside the truck, but I doubt it's any quieter outside.

I would have trimmed the tailpipe some, but I would never clamp a tip on!

well, my guage of loudness is driving through downtown...

I get over in the lane closest to the buildings and let her run.

It doesn't seem to have the same power it did before.

any power difference is all in your head... does the tip point more downward or toward the back than stock? that'll make it sound quieter as it won't bounce off as much stuff and back into your ear

Downtown Findlay? They have buildings there?

If you have your cat and muffler missing I don't think the tip will muffle much at all. I have a friend up from Nashville right now and he has an 04.5 that is straight piped and it is stupid loud. So loud that I am waiting for enough downtime from work to loose my muffler.

I should have been more clear before... I didn't mean "power" as in power the engine was making... I meant the "power" of the sound.

The tip is pointed in the same direction that the stock tip was... the only difference being that the tip stick out further... but only a few inches.

And yes, downtown Findlay has a few buildings

My cat is still on but the muffler is gone. I love the sound of it (well, I DID anyway)... it has a nice deep tone to it. I've toyed around with the idea of removing the cat, too, but I'm afraid it wont sound as good. I like loud, but quality is also important.

I agree with Forrest Nearing, VERY few thing sound as good as a straight piped Cummins...

When I put my exhaust together I turned the tip down with a 45deg elbow to keep it a little quieter. Straight pipe and I don't have any drone inside the cab, but its still loud as hell outside. If I have the windows closed going down the highway its really quiet.

Yeah, I know how good a 12v or older 24v sounds straight piped... I owned a 12v before I got this truck.

But a lot of people are complaining that a straight through 3rd gen sounds more like a ricer than a truck. With the cat still on my truck it was a sweet low grumble that was fairly loud (at least loud enough to set off a car alarm here and there). I got a lot of compliments on the sound... I'm just scared the take the cat off for fear of it turning into a ricer sound.

Once I can hear one in person or a sound clip I'll decide.

Although all these problems with my tip are making me lean towards just scrapping the whole system and putting on stacks (which is what I really want anyway).

In NC you have too have your car inspected ever year, emissions , obdII etc. If your inspection sticker runs out and you get stopped $250.00 fine and possible sieze on your registration. I was just wondering how you are getting by the emissions without a cat.
