Duramax Questions

I know there's a few Dmax guys on here, I'd like to pick your brains a bit if I could... Me and a buddy got into a discussion the other day. There is this guy around town with a Duramax that everybody thinks has at least 800HP. I don't believe it because nobody has ever seen any dyno numbers, my buddy thinks so, too (he's a semi mechanic), and he fed me the BS that he can't dyno because he would blow it up. So anyway.... He says there is a "chip" for Duramax's that you can just keep stacking one on top of the other and all it does is add more fuel, 100HP at a time. That's kind of tough to believe for me... He also said that the injectors are hydraulically operated, that pressurized oil opens and closes the injector, and that the fuel is only at about 40 PSI. I always thought that the Duramax had a similar common rail system to the 3rd Gen Cummins?

So, my basic questions are, does this miracle box exist? How does the the injection system work on the Dmax?

Your friend is wrong on the injection system, the Dmax uses a common rail system like a 3rd gen Cummins.

800 with just chips is BS. He might have that much in math HP. 100 HP chip + 30 HP air intake + 50 HP exhaust + 10 HP throttle body spacer + another 210 HP in stickers.

Crimedog,
A new LBZ is 360 plus a 200hp box and your at 560. You can play with a chip and pressure box for maybe 50-100 more but that's it. 800hp if it were true which I doubt based on the adding chips statement, would require larger turbo(s) and nitrous. No stacking alone will get you to 800hp

Well he has got alot confused. The oil pressure injection is from the direct injection fords, and fuel injected at 40psi? Nope it was 23,000 psi on early duramaxs, 26,000 on new ones. With the dyno the only thing I can think of that he could be thinking is maybe the local dyno will only read up to 500 hp? I know nothing about the boxes for those trucks. The injection system is bosch common rail, since the first ones came out. The fords oil pressure injection is a cat designed system. called h.u.e.i? I think.

race that '800 hp' and see who wins. I highly doubt he is putting down those kind of #'s. They can stack chips like the Dodge guys, but you need a tranny, bigger turbo, injectors, etc, etc

hope this helps

Total edit (Well you know the rest of the saying!) The stock CP-3 needs moded after about 600 rwhp on no. 2 only. There are several Duramax`s running in the 750-850 rwhp with drugs. But as far as I know, there are just 1 or 2 that has produced 800 rwhp on no.2 only. And believe me, it took more then stacking tuner boxes. (Like 2 each of turboes, CP-3`s, lift pumps, not to mention after market pistons, rods, injectors, head studs, And hard to tell what isn't disclosed!) The most you can expect from tuning only is about 520 rwhp, and even then you will need lift pumps. The most anyone has stacked that I am aware of is three boxes/programmers. And it didn't add 100 hp per box. Many cases show stacking helps anywhere from hurting real bad, to 30-50 hp for the second box, and even less for the 3rd box. (Some stack combos work, while others don't!)

The best power now comes from TTS (No stacking!) and EFIlive. (Again, no stacking!)

Flywheel, and rear wheel numbers is a huge difference. And to date, there is nothing in the 175 hp or more for the LBZ. I have not heard of any LBZ over about 440 rwhp. Where are you getting the 610-660 from? A dream you had?

Hdmax,
PPE box lists 225/390 for there programmer on extreme, being I listed an LBZ at 360, I though you would be smart enough to figure they were flywheel numbers, guess you got me alright

Thanks for the info guys. I figured it was all BS, but I wanted to hear from some folks who knew more about the Dmax than me.

I'd say anyone who "thinks" they have 800 RWHP is lying, or doesn't know! If I had what I thought was 800HP, I think I'd be trying to find out for sure...I'd like to brag about something like that

Most people who have 800hp, know it...and most of them don't tell anyone until they're asked about it
IMHO,
Chris

You can get a 200 horse chip for a LLY.04 is a half year have LBZ and half LLY with the variable turbo. From what I've heard you can make more the LLY than the LBZ.

I thought 04 was LB7 and then 04.5 to current was LLY. Now you can get LBZ in 06 as an option as well as LLY as standard. Maybe I read everything wrong.

You were right until the LLY as a standard, and LBZ an option. In 2006 models, the LLY was the early engine (Aug. through Oct.) Then in Nov. or Dec. the LBZ became the engine. This is for the Allison Automatic transmission.

I believe the LLY is the only engine for the 6 speed manual. (Even after the LBZ came out!) Are you confussed yet?
