Nope, I've yet to see GM produce a good Diesel for their cars a small trucks. If I had money to bet, I'd of bet big that the DuraMax would be another looser.

Just can't bet the old CTD. ;D

Re:The Duramax aint so good!

I've had four and they've been pretty good. They run like a rapped ape in the stock form. Now I can't say about the new HO/48re cause mine is not here yet but all the other Dodge/auto's I've had have not been able to keep up with my stock Dmax's. ???

Is that an ape that someone left locked in a dance club all night?

What we've been seeing thus far with the D-Max is if you're using them as a light truck, or hauling loads every now and again, they do well. As Luke said, they run very quick, especially once turned up.

But for the guys who have been trying to work them everyday, they've seen a pile of injector failures, blown headgaskets, and transmission trouble like you wouldn't believe. I've got one hotshotter with close to 650K on his Cummins, and all he's done engine wise is replace a VP44 and a head gasket. His DMax has 250K and has went through several injectors thus far, pulling lighter loads than he pulls with the Dodge.

Rod

Re:The Duramax aint so good!

I pull heavier than most people and have had no troubles. I also have sold a few hundred of them and the only problems we've had so far is a bad tranny solenoid. I only keep my trucks about 5,000 miles or so though :

Re:The Duramax aint so good!

One of my good race buddies just had his whole engine replaced in his DMax at 30k miles. The ******* had his truck for almost a month before he complained to the owner of the dealership (the didn't know how to fix it). They finally got a GM engineer down there and he authorized the whole engine to be replaced instead of being repaired. Aparently the crankcase was filling with fuel, and it seems to be a common problem. The truck was smoking almost worse than mine, but his was blue where mine is the lovely black I know that Schied diesel had a DMax doing the exact same thing. The guys up there said those motors are horrendous to work on, too.

John

Re:The Duramax aint so good!

Well that was mainly the case of a bad dealer. Your truck is only as good as your dealer I always say. These things get a lot of bad press but I had good luck with mine(except the one in the 4500 medium duty, to much truck, not enough engine). And as I said we have had no major engine or tranny trouble out of any of em

Just pokin' at ya.

Seriously though, I do find it interesting how some brands of trucks have problems in certain geographical locals. Much of this has to do with dealership service of course, but I can't see it all having to do with it. For example, our local Chevy boys have sold 5 D-maxes (total, we're Dodge boys up here ;D) and each of them have come back with injector troubles, and 3 have come back with blown head gaskets. All five were sold to heavy haulers (25K+ trailer and load).

But in Southern AB, I personally know three cattlemen who haul heavy, and they had nothing but trouble with their 24 valve Dodges (lift pumps disappeared like mad) but since switching to D-maxes their problems all went away.

And these are just a couple examples. I suspect much of it has to do with fuel quality (lack thereof up here :'() and with the average temps the trucks see.

Rod

Re:The Duramax aint so good!

If I had an 03 dodge I might want to watch these duramax problems. Seems to me the two injection systems are an awful lot alike? Arn't some of the duramax probs related to fuel according to the General?
I dont wish anyone bad luck with their diesel, but I bought an '02 because of watching what was going on with injectors in the duramax and did'nt want to take a chance on the same thing in the cummins.
Are they similar and can the same things plague the Almighty Cummins also?

Duane.

Re:The Duramax aint so good!

Dmax is got a funky fuel pump, radial pump if I remember right. I'm not sure if they got a fuel rail or not but if i remember right they do. The 03 dodge is got a fuel rail and regular injection pump like the newer john deere's got. They'er having problems with em now but if they get their rear in gear they'll get her straightened out, maybe in a couple years

Re:The Duramax aint so good!

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm sure the iron injector in the aluminum head is the source of some of their fueling problems. Everyone was so worried about the cracking of the head and never thought about injector problems.

I think that if Cummins is gonna go common rail in all their industrial and Dodge ISBE, then they were more prepared to do it.. IMO..

J-eh
