Duramax?

So how is the chevy diesel? Any horror stories that you have actually seen?

I've heard a few horror stories, haven't actually seen any personally. All around though I think it's a good design. My uncle has one, an 04, and drives it very hard, and it hasn't let him down yet, just turned 100k miles the other day....


stick with cummins haha.

certainly none of the horror stories like those of the fords. I drove a duramax LLY for about a year and thought it was a good motor, made the switch to the cummins cause I was going to get a new truck and just wanted to try something new. Both DC & GM are producing great trucks now and providing healthy competition for each other.

dad's 12 dmax has a six speed in it and after the dual mass flywheel and clutch went at 20k miles then again at 25k i installed a southbend clutch with a single organic disc and one piece flywheel. drives great.

my only experience with one is from my cousin. He ran it out of fuel and it took like 2 cans of either and about 2 hours to get it started again (and he aint no retard either! his dad and him worked on it together, and they work on/run heavy equiptment all the time)

yeah from what I've heard they are hard to start if you run them dry, or even after a fuel filter change they can be hard to start for awhile.

i have change dad's and after bleeding it . it cranked right up . no residual problems. i do kill the engine letting out the clutch at a stop sign , just used to that cummins.

ive see this happen also alot in the winter on an 03 dmax
Ive heard of an early dmax blow up on a local dyno.
I know of a guy thats a gm tech like and he tells me all bad injector stories he works on.

Well, my time as a GM tech led me to believe that the D-max is a very nice engine. The main issue is that the LB7's have bad injectors. GM worked the warranty so that the injectors are covered for 200k mi. The said injectors typically last 80k mi. This problem was fixed with the LLY though. Also, yes it is a PITA to get one started after a filter change or running out of fuel, but definately not impossible, just patience. All in all, I would love to have a D-max but the price and the Cummins makes me lean towards Dodge.

I don't feel the Dmax is a good alternative to the Cummins if you are looking for long term ownership. I would rather replace some front end parts (if 4x4) on a Dodge every so often than mess with injectors or other high dollar issues with that motor. I drove one for three years. The longer I had it the more I wanted to unload it. It was by no means the great engine like they wished it was but it does "work" much better than previous GM diesels.

I love this dodge....but I wish I had bought the GM,I think that I got a lemonish one.the fuel system on these 01's are a joke!
and no way to adjust the clutch? whats up with that?
I'm hooked now,but if I'd have known the trouble I'd have with this I would have went older,newer,or different brand.

So, A duramax would still perform as good as a Cummins? I was thinking about which one is "better" is ALL aspects.

Depends on what kind of performance you are looking for. Yes it is as good and/or better performance wise. The Allison is what makes it shine. I don't feel it's as good pulling over the road from everything I've read.

On the other hand it's a little more "glitchy" which was my experience. Strange things happen that are hard to get fixed.

The Cummins is much easier to work with, if needed.

personally i think all the new big three rigs are getting more wierd problems with the wiring and computers on board. some little static or rf or bad ground in the forty some ground locations and bam you are sitting there stuck. i do like the feel of the cummins on a pull. dads dmax we pulled two units of wet 2x6 with eight thirty foot telephone poles on top over mt. hood had to slow down for the corners going up hill. ride and steering are car like. but once it gets some miles will likely give problems because of the cush factor. big three need to build pickups for the farmers and haulers and if someone wants a carlike ride build a pickup for them. sorry just the way i feel .

I have seen late model GM trucks pulling heavy and the front end bouncing. Didn't look very comfortable or safe.
