DTR TOM for September 2004
DTR TOM for September 2004
Wow!
The month has disappeared and caught me snooooooozin'
We think we have chosen another great truck and owner for our September winner.
Bill is one of our members who works his truck hard, yet still keeps it sharp.
He's also one of the first folks to jump in and help answer questions that come up in our forums.
It keeps getting harder to pick from all those rides in our photo gallery.
We love it.
The members of the TOM committee, Dennis, Joel and Ed, along with our TOM sponsor
Forest City Diesel
are happy to announce that the winner of the

First let me say how surprised and honored I am that my truck was chosen for the truck of the month. I would also like to say how much I enjoy this board, the administration and the members that make it the great board that it is. I have learned much from the board and hope that I have helped some along the way.
My truck is a 1999 Burgundy 2500 4X4 SLT, Quad cab. Through just plain bad luck, it earned its name this past winter, “Murphy’s Law.” This was due to engine problems that were not the fault of the truck or the operation. It has proven to take anything I can throw at it with the heavy work that I do. I pull a 50-foot car haul trailer. With over 280,000 hard miles on it, it think it is notable that it still has its original front bearings, rotors and rear drums.
I have always felt that when something goes bad or wears out, there must be something stronger or more powerful to shoehorn into the truck. The engine is a full commercial ISB275 that was built for a Peterbuilt 330 as a test engine for the Cummins Plant in Columbus, Indiana. It had less than 4000 miles on it. I installed it complete with the commercial VP44 and the air compressor system. It also runs the Edge EZ. To install the compressor the power steering pump had to be changed to a unit that would bolt to the compressor. It is a unit for a larger truck with the pressure reset to Dodge requirements. The motor mounts had to be modified slightly to accommodate the compressor and pump. The air tanks are mounted under the doors of the cab. The engine produces awesome towing power at average 12 mpg with my loads.
It has the Scotty II air filter system with the hole in the cowl. A FASS fuel pump system with 3/8 lines to the VP44 supplies the fuel from a bottom feed in the tank. It has an ATS exhaust manifold, ported to the gasket line. The manifold is tapped for the EGT gage and a boost gage for testing exhaust pressures. A straight pipe on the stock exhaust system and the last turnout removed produces no drone with excellent EGT’s. It has Rancho 9000 shocks on all four corners. To comply with length laws in some states the pickup bed was removed and it is registered as a “Tractor.” It is licensed for 33,000 pounds.
Murphy runs an NV5600 with the 1 3/8 input shaft and a South Bend Clutch. The rear axle is the stock 2500 Dana 80, Limited Slip with the 3.54 ratio. Arrowcraft dual wheel adaptors were added along with Ford wheels that have a deeper backspace. They allow wider tires. Best tires so far are Michelin Rib. They get about 90,000 miles before replacement. These tires are 32 inch so I installed a Truspeed speedometer calibrator to regain accuracy. A Jordan controller handles the brakes for the trailer.
A Warn M15000 winch is mounted to the original trailer hitch frame on the rear with a pulley setup on the trailer to pull cars onto the trailer. Inside it runs Isspro gages with a Rods Pod mounting. An Alpine stereo with remote and a 300-watt amplifier keeps me from boredom along with a 2 meter Amateur radio. An electric cooler keeps the drinks cold.
Future plans call for a 3-inch cab lift, a frame stretch and a sleeper. Of course it has to have stacks. Very soon the air horns will be added. The truck is never finished; as most can attest that like to change things.

If you keep this up the only original parts will be the cab and the frame.

Several have commented on the Ford wheels... they have a different hubcentric diameter and have to have adaptors made for them. If I remember right, they are slightly smaller. I had to have the adaptors machined out to fit the Dodge rear hub.
