Diesel Storage??

I have some diesel stored in 5 gal red plastic jerry cans...A co worker said he'd heard that these type cans were only good to store gasoline because the diesel breaks the plastic down...Is that true??? Do I need metal jerry cans??

No, you can put it in plastic can , you can even put it in a milk jug.

most places recommned the yellow fuel cans for diesel so that way you do nto get confused if the fuel can has gas or diesel in it..

I use red for gas, yellow for diesel, and yellow with markings on them for bio

then even my wife knows what is in what with having to ask

How long do you think you can store diesel if you bought it in bulk?

It's hard to say with the new ULSD just because it hasn't been around all that long.
The older LSD was good in storage for many years.
I gave a 500 gallon farm tank that had been sitting in my boneyard for at least 15 years and still had about 50 gallons in it to a friend.
Far from the best storage conditions.
Told him he better only use it for starting burn piles but he put it in his John Deere and said it ran fine.

Keep the containers full and in least in the shade if not at a constant temp and I bet it will last years.

Agreed and..

I've been burning some stuff which I discovered a few months ago in the family's beach house; it was last filled in the early 70's (30+ years old!) and it runs great; had about 700 gallons of it too boot. It smells like it has quite a bit of sulphur in it but my trucks don't seem to mind. Also for storage; don't store diesel in a galvinized can, I've been told it leaches the zinc out of the material which causes deposits in the high pressure fuel system.

As far as the ULSD, it's anybody's guess

I'm sure there are more than a few thinking about storing up large amounts of diesel now when the price is low... Sounds like by the end of the year the prices may bottom out..

Sort of like playing the stock market ehh?
Why not just buy fuel oil futures, you don't need a can to store them.

A friend of mine buys his diesel & propane about a yr. at a time , form a local fuel site , gets an account , then just goes to fill up on the diesel , or calls to get the bulk propane tank filled , so far the only time he has lost out , is when he tries to do the same at the gas / fuel stations , he thinks that the price is about to go up and may top off the tanks in pickup , but the price changes too fast .
