Diesel Smog laws in CA.

To get it smoged, do they run a test like cars?

Or do they just look at it to see if you changed anything on the truck and if not pass it?

they just looked at mine, Made sure it had a stock turbo, intercooler and had the CAT and no Boxes.

hooked it up to the computer to check the program and for codes..

did a "snap test" floor the throttle and see if there is excessive smoke (must dissipate within 10 seconds) they did 2 of these...

No rollers or exhaust probe. Total waste of money.. Smog guy was happy about it..

Which smog station in LA did you go to? The smog stations in Ventura county have no clue on what to check since my truck is not OBDII ready so they failed inspection on truck for no communication with ECM.

my '03 has a Banks 6-gun w/speedloader stacked. I passed since the BAR says the Banks systems are on their list of approved tuners... there's a LOT of tuners that are ok as well... you have to go to their web site and see for yourself.

It had the tuner on it and working, set to level 1 (which is stock) and they hit the pedle once and hooked up the ECM for download and whatever it does to the Sac computers and he looked under it once as well. It doesnt have a CAT on it but it does have a muf and 6" polished stainless stacks. So, go figure. if that can pass you ain't got a worry in the world. LoL

Big Iron, haven`t bought the truck yet. Still decideing but the dealer has not smoged it yet to make it ready for a sale.

DennyB, you lost me after your signature of 3500 dually. LOL

What is the rest of that all mean? I like the idea of 26MPG, can i get that with a 5.9 and a 6 speed?

It's the seller's responsibility, private or commercial, to smog the vehicle prior to a change of ownership. The claimed mpg is not realistic.

I went over to a place called painless smog.. it is in Inglewood behind a carwash at Manchester and Hindry.. (just west of the 405 frwy)...

he did have to hook up 2 different computers to the truck to get it to read.

I bought mine new in 2005 so this thing was all new to me also...

Talking

My son has taken his 2004 Quadcab 4X4 to two stations in Ventura and both said the because it is not OBD II compliant they can not pass it. He went to the local Dodge dealer who contacted Dodge factory service and was told that their trucks that were made before January 2006 are not OBD II compliant.

So, tomarrow my son has an appointment with the Smog Referee in Oxnard to see what he does. The dealer asked my son to let them know the results.

I will leave feedback when I have it.

Jim

A day has passed and here is the update:

My son took his truck to the Smog Referee and the referee called the State and was told that he needed to see somthing in writing from the Dealer verifying that there is no problem with my sons truck other than the fact the computer is not OBD II compliant. The Referee even called the dealer and explained what they needed to give my son. He also said that my son needed to see him again and bring the letter from Dodge. He also told my son that he needed to call the State, 1-800-622-7733, to schedual a new appointment to see him again once he has the letter, last time I was on hold for over 30 minutes before they pickedup. Also the Referee will be in Santa Barbara the 29th & 30th so my son needs to see him there because my sons registration expires on 7/31, just another half day he needs to take off work and 100 miles to drive.

So, my son went back to the dealer and spoke with the service department, they said they had to contact Dodge before they could give him the letter the Referee had requested. My son needs to check with them tomarrow, 7/29/10.

To be continued!

7/29/10

Well today was a good day, after the dealer contacted Dodge they told them to install the same software update on my son 2004 as they had provided in a recall they had issued for the 2003 and 2005 modle years.

My son took his truck back to the smog station in Ventura and they ran the test and it passed!

Looks like Dodge should have also issued a recall on the 2004 modle year.

My son is going to keep his paperwork just incase there is a problem in 2 years.

They never hooked mine up to any computer. I wonder if it's model year based whether they hook it up or not?

They checked for the Cat, looked under the hood pointed at things for 5 minutes and then stomped the pedal 3 times. The smoke has to clear within 3-4 seconds per the smog tech.

I have a home-brew 2 micron setup in the engine compartment. The smog station was not going to pass me until I showed them the original fuel filter setup had not been bypassed

Angry Bought 03 Dodge New With No Cat....

However Smog Mech failed me because their book says my truck should have a Cat. They called the dealer to verify and the dealer stated it should have a cat also.

I made an appt. and saw the BAR Referee and when he looked in his book it showed that 03' doesnt need a Cat. I thought I was golden, but after the Referee called another dealer and was told my truck should have a cat by checking the last 8 digits of my Vin, he told me I would have to deal with Medford Lithia Dodge, or install a Cat in order to register my truck.

I have placed a call to the dealer but have not heard back from them. I feel the dealer should either provide me documentation that my truck does not need and did not come with a cat, or install it on their dime if it needs one.

There is a catalyst sticker under the hood, however my truck is an 11/2002 and there is even a placard on the engine that states that in conforms to 2002 epa standards etc.

Frustrating to say the least. This is all getting so assinine! How did you get away with not having a cat on your 2003? Any advice for me in my situation?

Thanks,

Jetmanjo,
Redding, Ca.

If you failed SMOG with 2003-2006 RAM Diesel due to “System Status Check

If you failed SMOG with 2003-2006 RAM Diesel due to “System Status Check” failing such as “Comprehensive – Not Complete”, etc. Dodge has a recall “Bulletin” on this issue and will flash your ECU with an updated program to correct this error if you bring in a copy of the failed SMOG check report indicating it is due to this reason.
