Diesel Sandrail

Hi,

someone must have built one!

Been watching a lot of Glamis and Pismo vids lately and I´m kinda hooked on these beasts. I just love how they jump

Ok, putting the big I6 Cummins in there would not work due to its massive weight, but maybe the small 3.0 I6 BMW bi-turbo diesel tuned to 350 hp would work (or just build a sandrail that can handle the Cummins)

Positive: no need to buy gasoline
Negative: those crazy 1000+ hp twin turbo sandrails sound so great

Any ideas?

Thx,
Kris

Sounds like a nice setup you have there. Do you have any pics you´d like to share? Which diesel would have been your choice?

Had a quick look at google, it seems like some other people had the idea of a diesel sandrail but no one actually built one. All that torque would be great in a sandrail.

Thought about using a 4bt as it´s quite a bit lighter. If it is as reliable as the 6bt then it should handle a lot of boost either.

I have videos, how do you go about uploading them to you tube? Says files are too large. Took like 35min for a 10min video then the connection timed out. Had to shorten the vid but same problem. Any tips?

I've seen video of a cut down freightliner "convertible" with the big I-6 still in it at pismo (I don't recall which engine) dropped the rear drive, put big floats on it. it hauled <edit>. it was awesome. I'll try to find those vids but man that was a long time ago. i can't remember.

...I LOVE big gear like that.

Heres another freightliner turned into a saltflat racer. 3000hp 16v92 detroit. it made something like 218 MPH weighing in at 18,000lb race weight.

You can get 150 hp out of a TDI motor . I would also love to build one with a 1998 or 1999 Mercedes 300td motor 24 valve dual over head cams 4500 red line inline pump like a p pump

There´s more power in a TDI motor. The newer ones pump out 180 hp from a twin turbo 2.0 l I4. That´s stock, but I think they are now common rail designs. With a chip 210-220 hp without messing with emissions. At the Dakar rallye they used the 2.5 l I5 from VW/Audi, stock around 180 hp. I think they made somewhere like 250 hp with these engines. But from what I´ve read, those V6 common rail diesel engines from VW/Audi (and Porsche!) with 240 hp are more reliable than those I5 engines. Some tuners boost these to 290 hp. I guess that would be enough for a sandrail. With the torque it would be really nice in the dunes.

Oh, and those new BMW diesel engines, nice! Above 200 hp from a 2.0 I4 and above 300 hp from their straight six.

Now the question would be, how much power could you get out of a 4bt? Twin turbos, large injectors, enough fuel etc.

So the 6bt is like 1200 lbs? Or even heavier. At 800 lbs it might be hard for a rail but it would be fun with enough boost
