Detroit DDEC

I'm looking at motorhomes and found one that looks interesting but it's been too long since I've played with the Detroits to remember what the DDEC system affects. Is it an engine control system or just a diagnostic system? The motor in question is a 1992 "Silver 6V92 Detroit Deisel with DDEC 360 HP and Allison HT 746 transmission".

My guess would be just a diag. system. Those old Detrits were all mechanical and didn't need the DDEC to run. I could be wrong but even Cummins and Cat were still putting out mechanical motors with OBD in 92.

DDEC. Detroit Diesel Electronic Control. Controls the injectors. Fairly simple ECM. As far as electronics go. As well as afew other simple sending units.

Well, from what I hear here and what I find on the 'net, it sounds like it's an electronic injector control unit in addition to a monitoring system. I'm more partial to mechanical injection systems but can any one tell me from experience how reliable the DDECII or DDECIII systems are?

At one time we had about 200 DDECII or III units and had very few problems with them. You will have way more problems with the Trans. than the engine.

all DDEC engines utilize electronic unit injectors. and DDEC was introduced in 1987. Like was said. A 6v92 DDEC should be very reliable if its in good shape to start with. there are literally thousands of those on the roads still to this day, that engine is the apex of transit bus and fire truck use of the early to mid '90s.

Those don't have the SRS and TRS sensors do they? Or are those just the 60 series? We replace those things all the time, and truck is dead w/o either one.

I would prefer the electric injectors on any 2 stroke Detroit than have to adjust the injector racks. What a pain.

DDEC is probably the best thing to ever happen to 2 stroke diesel's. I wouldn't want one without it.

Yes Sir.. Even with that, 2 stroke diesel from DD are a thing from the past.

actually Detroit still manufactures new 92s for the US military. Just learned that the other day from on of the other techs that recently got a tour of the Detroit facility.

But obviously dead for on road use outside of transit use.
