Cummins to meet '07 emmisions w/o aftertreatment...
This is off today's Autotech Daily, but it may be old news to us:
CUMMINS: ENGINES WITH ADVANCED EGR WILL MEET
2007 NOX REGULATIONS
Diesel enginemaker Cummins Inc. says it will meet 2007 U.S. on-highway standards for oxides of nitrogen emissions without having to use adsorbers, selective catalytic reduction or other expensive aftertreatment systems. Instead, the Columbus, Ind.-based company says it can get the job done with current cooled-exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology and low-sulfur diesel fuel, which is mandated starting in 2006. Cummins has been evaluating various technologies in a mobile emissions research laboratory since early 2002. Although recent test results confirm engines with cooled-EGR units will meet the 2007 NOx requirements, the supplier says exhaust filters will be necessary to meet more stringent requirements for particulate emissions due the same year. In Europe, Cummins plans to use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet upcoming Euro IV NOx standards. The company currently uses SCR, which injects urea into the exhaust stream ahead of the catalytic converter, for some off-highway applications.
