I know it's not a Cummins, but this is pretty cool.

I don't know........kinda sounds like a city bus .........Yup, got love the tow rig - doesn't get too much more impractical than a big block 'burb on 38's with 9.5" of lift

A 12 valve you ask..................

MY 12V

This is the 2nd engine in this truck. The last one only "lived" for 32000 miles.
I juiced it a bit tooooo much and turned number 1 into a silvery substance in the turbo.

Life is a B ------- a 6B that is.

Question Is this for real?

1976 GMC 3/4 Ton 2WD 453 Detroit 2-stroke Turbo,
four speed main, 2 speed auxilary. 4 inch exhaust from
the turbo back. There is a muffler, but it is a big one:-)
Mileage unknown, probably around 400-500,000, but it
is my daily driver and runs great! 17.5MPG, 2000RPM
at 65MPH.

Hmm. I haven't played with Detroits much but I thought that a Detroit 53 series was supercharged like the 71 series, not turbocharged. Is my memory failing or is there something wrong with this description?

to answer your question, depending on model, some have both a turbo and a supercharger the super charger just helps with scavenging (pushing the exhausted gas-charge out of the cylinder, and drawing in a fresh draught of air). They are great motors and I get to see them everyday. The roadway company here in williamsport wich is right out my dorm window runs them and they sound sweet.

I forgot to add... Depending on model again, the super charger and turbo both help each other spool also. Just thought I would add that.

Lightbulb Detroit

Used to work on the inline Detroit 6-71, 8V-71, 8V-92 2 stroke cycle engines. They sure did run smooth too, the inline had a rotating counterbalance for the harmonics. Since the injectors are fired by the camshaft you actually had 6, 1 cylinder engines. I had one come in and the cam had broken in 3 places and was still running. During a road call had the fuel rack bind and the engine self destructed, Just had time to get out of the way.
If you put a bad driver on the rig and they lug the engine they will burn the fire deck and melt the valves.

Had a driver backing the trailer up a incline and then shut down the engine, the trans was in reverse and he rolled foreward and popped out the clutch. It spun the engine backwards and started up. It was running backwards funny to see the exhaust blowing out of the air cleaner.
And now you know.. Jim
