Question Which compac Tractor to get???

Does anyone have and use a compact tractor. I am looking for one. What is the best tractor for the price? I am looking for one with around 26 to 30 HP and 4WD.

John Deere(too much money in my book)
Kubota
Mahindra

Any others?

This sort of question has been asked here before - one important consensis we have come to is the following: Buy for the dealer - they need to be good and stand behind the unit. There are vast differances in the equipment market in terms of dealers - it's imparitive the you find out the best one and make your decision based off this.

I'm familiar with Deere products, the Yanmar engine in these are quite relaible, you would be looking at 755 - 855 (hydrostat) and 770 - 870 gear drive units. They are expensive - but they hold thier value well and have good attachments. Kubota makes a good product also, I am less familiar with them overall but I like what I have seen. Good luck!

A friend of mine has a New Holland and he likes it a lot. Other than that I really dont have much experience with newer tractors.

I prefer JD but mostly have larger ones.
Had a JD 970, excellent tractor but didn't need it any more. Sold it for more than I paid for it new 1200 hrs and seven years later.

I'm JD myself, but have quite a bit of time on my friends Kubotas.

His 2150 has a loader, FWD, Standard tranny. That has been one impressive little machine. We did find the breaking point last week tho... While moving a 8 x 16 building on skids, he tried to push a couple trees over that were in the way. Too big of a bite at one time, and POW went the spider gears. First big problem in 2500 hours of very hard use.

New parts due in the morning, very easy to tear down once you find the right metric socket.

I'm impressed with this machine.

Not much American about a JD compact. It's a Yanmar. Made in Japan. Once you accept that you can't buy an American made compact tractor, it becomes a question of where you can go for service and attachments. Mine is a 17 hp diesel (of course) Kubota. Built in 1987. Four wheel drive, hydrostatic transmission, 5 foot mid mount mower deck, front end loader, cab, category 1 3-point hitch, 6 foot rear scraper, and I built a generator that runs off the pto. Makes about 7kw. Great little tractor. Are you sure you need 26 to 30 hp? That's enough to do a lot of work. I know guys running a full time farm with a 30 hp tractor. I've heard the newer Kubota's aren't as good as the older ones. Something about the engines.

Got to disagree with you there, yes the 3020 series uses a yanmar engine engine, but that's all. The rest of it is made is agusta Georga, as for the 4020 series use a 4024 deere engine and are also made in agusta Georga

Yeap, it is a big decision. If I make a mistake it is going to cost me. I can get a Mahindra (mitsubishi diesel) locally with a loader, bushhog, and box blade model 2615 for 15,210. I can barely get the Kubota L2800 for 14,500. Decisions, decisions, Keep the post coming. An yes, all compacts are made overseas. They are put together in the States, which is good. I would love to have a JD. They start at 18,000. ouch.

I have A JD that went for a great price -it had the manual trans rather than the "more user friendly" automatic. Its a great little tractor that could.

Its a great tractor and the Yanmar is a great little engine.

When you consider the cost of a tractor carefully figure in your re-sale value.

A JD or Kubota hold value better than many other "less expensive" brands. JD much better. Often the JD will sell higher when others won't at all- a nice hedge against having to sell it when you don't want to in a bad market.

So the premium you pay up front comes back on the other end. Lots of "hobby" farmer/ranchers, the ones that want a small tractor, won't even look at anything but a Deere.

Yes, I have just started to study resale values. I am considering that very closely. That is some very good advice.
