Clutch Fork pivot ball... spring clip?

I forgot to put the spring clip on my clutch fork I was about to unbolt the tranny to slide it on but I don't see why it's nesscessary. What exactly what be the big deal if I didn't use the srpinf retainer clip on the clutch fork that attaches to the pivot ball?
