General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

We've had some impressive snow blowing equipment rolling through here lately as well.
The Sierra's have been hit hard this season and even with the many snow-sheds, for a while, they had to have snow equipment on every run over Donner Summit.

Great Photo's! Thanks Redleg.

Rich.

I'll have to try and get the big, modern one CSX brings in. I think it's called a Jordan Spreader.

Couple from a crash in '77. Not sure about this one, but snowmobiles crossing the tracks pack the snow which frrezes like a rock and causes derailments.
That's just a taste Scott.

77 was one of the heaviest snowfalls in recent history.

That wasn't caused by any snow mobile. A crossing that's really hard packed with ice and snow can cause a derailment, but a snowmobile won't do it. That looks more like they just got into snow that was too deep, and derailed. It happens, just usually not that bad. If I could get my scanner to to work, I'd put some pics up of what it looks like from the inside when you're plowing with Jordan ditcher. Not really much to see from the pics though I guess...Inside of a spreader cab, and nothing but white outside.

A snowmobile maybe not. A point where more than one, or common use area, will cause a derailment. The first pics I showed were from a plow that was just returned to service. It sat out most of last season because they hit a spot where snowmobiles had the snow packed. It'll be soft during the day and freeze solid at night. The rails can also get warmed in the sunlight, melt the snow, causing a puddle in the packed down area, then freeze solid. This shortline usually runs in the evenings to avoid traffic. Most of Northern Michigan is rural and there are many unlighted crossings. One of those same diesels got derailed last year too, on a freight run, from packed snow at a road crossing, where snowmobiles croossed the tracks along the shoulder of the road, probably helped by the county plow in that spot too. When I patrolled northern Michigan, that railroad use to send us requests to run off the snowmobiles from their tracks, specifying concerns about derailments. I'm sur if they ran half a dozen trains a day, it would be a non-issue. Oh yeah, they got revenge last year too. Two brand new Ski-doos got smucked outside a bar in that area. They thought the tracks were abandoned and parked there while inside. James, I'd love to see those pics. If I still had my scanner, I have some more good stuff too.
