case 930
case 930
My brother and i may be trying our hand at building a pulling tractor based off of an old case 930 thats just sitting around. Does anyone have any experience with these, namely with turning up the pump? We've asked around on several other sites, but just got a bunch of spoilers telling us that this tractor sucks. I know it's not the best platform, but i've seen a few online that pull with 930's, just can't find any contact info on them. If all else fails we may just stick a dt466 in it and be done with it, but would rather see what we can do with the 401ci case diesel.
My first question: Look at the frame. What is it made of? If it's Cast-iron, stop in your tracks; put it up for sale. If it's an actual steel frame, like our trucks only larger, proceed with your project. (When I'm referring to frame, I mean the device holding up the engine on a tractor.)
Some of the older Case units had a cast frame, which was fine for the rated load. Anything more, and they could literally snap off the front of the tractor. That old Case engine is solid, however and should hold up to whatever you throw at it. I realize it's a project, and you should have some fun with it. I would encourage you to check current residual values of these tractors - most 60's and 70's units seem to have risen signifigantly in value over the past few years.

Everyone tells us this. it is a FREE tractor. We have turbo and plans to adapt it plus gauges. To get it going and smoking will be free. If it is cast, we will just use it to play on the ranch. Otherwise, we will continue. Its not ours to sell, but we can do whatever mods to it. And being that were both poor country boys, our truly desired 5088 or 1086 is out of question (for now).
That and even if it was ours to sell, these old 930's are only going for like 3k or less in cherry (read near factory restored) condition. One of these day's i'll have a 1066 or 1086 though.
I think you are right, but i haven't even seen the tractor in a couple of months so i don't remember for sure. It's sitting in the pasture collecting yellow jackets right now, lol.
A 930 has a cast block which basically is the Frame, similar to the later 70 series. They are a mechanical inline pump set up, naturally aspirated a 930 is rated stock for about 80 h.p roughly if I remember right.
I have ran lot so f the old Case tractors over the years, in fact I still have a 970 that I actually use quite a bit. The rear ends aren't known for being super stout.
In any case I'm sure you can still have some fun with the old girl if you are just looking for a project.

I have heard that the old Case engines (pre-Cummins) are prone to head cracks. I am not questioning its ability as a pulling tractor, just curious as to if someone has heard this before. Our neighbor still has a 930 (he used to have two, I think), and it has been a good machine for many years. The 930 was a large farming tractor in its day and it is interesting that the rated engine speed was only 1300 rpms or something like that. But, I suppose that was usual for engines of that era.

I knew of a 1030,that was pulled for several years. The guy that owned it said it was pushing 300 hp. He ran a 4inch chanel iron, down both sides from the front end to the bolts that held the steps, for a little extra strength as far as I know he never had any problems with the tractor breaking in the middle. I have a 1030 that had the front ears broke off of the block, the guy that owned it before me had about 1,000 pounds on thr front that wasn't fastened down and they banged around so much that the tractor fanally broke. He had the ears welded back on,and after I got it I did the chanel iron thing, and it has held togethr for twenty years of hard farm work. I have two old 1030 tractors, the only real trouble Iv'e had was overheating, when working hard on hot days.
I have a 930 they are pretty stout old tractors. I have never tried to turn mine up but im sure you can. Does yours have a 6 speed trans or an 8 speed? The 8 speed is a later model and is stronger. I have thought about putting a turbo on my tractor but from what i've read they wont handel too mutch boost. Also the old 401 is indirect injected case called it a "powercell head" It only revs to 1800 rpm under load. My suggestion is to put a some-what small turbo on this motor and start slowly turning up the pump to see what it does. Whatch your egt's and I wouldnt go over 15-20lb of boost or the old head gaskets are goona let go fast. Let me know what appens.
