around here we leave the batteries connected but always drape a piece of chain across the frame onto the ground between the weld and the computer/battery

Sounds like the classic explanation for Counter Electro-Motive Force (CEMF). Inductive loading is a very real problem - we see it every day on the grid when we try to maintain a careful balance between inductive loads and reactive loads (capacitance).
