buying a big truck (mack)
my dad and I are thinking about buying a mack semi truck for a project. going to lower it a little play with the motor and put a flat bed on the rear.
anyone have any idea how we could get this thing on the road. do we need a cdl to drive it. we have a big farm and were going to use it for farm use. if we get it it will never pull a semi trailer. anyone on here ever done anything like this before? any help would be great
it is selling at an auction sunday.

You don't say where you are located. It used to be here in the NW if you were driving a farm licensed rig you could nearly get away with murder. Some of that has changed but I don't know how much. I think you can drive almost anything with a farm license and not have a CDL but I am not totally sure any more. BTW, what type/kind/model of Mack are you looking at? I have driven a whole lot of them from the 60's on up to the latest models. Generally an all round really good piece of equipment.

I think you will need a cdl to drive on the highway, considering the weight and air brakes . If you fix it up with a bathroom and sleeping quarters I think you can get by without cdl's because they see it as an RV. just my.02

oh, i have a CDL, so if they can't drive it, i can. too bad for them . i thought that you could drive basically any vehicle with just an operators license, so long as you are not engaged in any sort of commecial buisness with it. although there may be something about how the truck is titled? i don't know the legalites, after all, i am just a truck driver.

Better check on insurance before you buy it. I was going to buy an old Dodge D500 road tractor from Luke a while back just to play with and they wanted $3000 a year plus a one time $3500 fee for whatever reason. I guess just because they can. I scratched the idea right there. I even said I would take off the 5'th wheel and put a pickup bed on it. Said the truck size is what gets you.

with a farm vehicle licence u can't step foot on a local road...check your local state laws..but I would think if u ever intend to take it on the road you may be required a full AZ license...makes great revenue for these guys

Just curious...what is the difference between a CDL and your AZ License? I know your A if for towing a larger weight, and Z is for air brakes...so what's the difference with a Commercial License?
