Buddy has 04 6.0 silver badge of death troubles

A buddy of mine has an 04 powerchoke and is having turbo barking issues. The truck has 45k miles on it and he says that the turbo is barking very easy under light loads or acceleration. Just taking off from a lite at what i would consider to be normal conditions, if he lets off the skinny pedal quickly vs gradualy the turbo barks hard. The check engine light is also on in the truck. The truck is bone stock, no fueling mods at all, just a banks 4in exhaust. Could the turbo bearings be bad? I know that turbo bark is seen/heard more on trucks that have lots of fuel, even with my truck, i have to work at it to get the turbo to bark. This powerchoke barks to easy. Thanks for any info you guys can share.

My former truck, as well as several of my friends trucks all had turbos replaced...one of the symptoms was excessive turbo bark. If he still has a warranty, tell him to take it in to the dealer to have it looked at. My bet will be turbo replacement.

Thanks for the reply, he is brining it to the dealer on Wed. He told me that there was a $100 dollar deductible for warranty work. I told him that i had never heard of that before and that there was no decuctible with cummins warranty.

Yeah, anything after 3/36 and up to 100/5 yrs has a $100 deductible. unless of course he bought an extended warranty.

Since we are talking about buddies, a buddy of mine has an 06' 6.0. His truck got where it wouldn't run, loading up and smoking black. Sounded like the vains in the VGT sticking to me. He took it in and they said the EGR was clogged, so they cleaned it and charged him for it. Not under warranty. Anybody heard of an EGR doing this. His is bone stock also.

I went through 4, yes 4, EGR valves on my former truck...two of those diabled the truck and required a tow. The EGR valves get all carboned up and they stick, either open or closed. All were under warranty. I got rid of the truck just prior to the warranty expiring.

Your buddy got rolled! The egr is covered under warranty! If he still has the paperwork where the dealership charged him he could get that dealership in BIG trouble cause what they probably did "if this story is true" is charge him and charge Ford for the warranty work performed!

superf350,

I remember reading your posts at the "other" site when I had my Ford. You always took up for Ford, as I did when I had mine. It just got to the point where enough was enough and I couldnt take it anymore. Can you honestly say that you havent't had any issues with your truck???

As far as "if this story is true", chances are it's very true.

No troubles for me. Guess I know how to "stroke" my powerstroke! As far as the story goes, if it's true the guy needs to learn how to read is warranty guide. Is it Fords fault people can't read or aren't smart enough to now when a dealership is scamming them?

I'm glad to hear that. I can't say I didnt like the truck when it ran right. But heres a list of the issues I had in 32K miles:

4 EGR valves, Reverse planetary went out and destroyed tranny(new tranny), numerous tranny shift solenoids(~3x), two turbos, the IC tube constantly popped off of turbo(under loads), and a constant "wandering" issue that made long trips with a trailer miserable. It had to be towed 3 times, and the last time was with 5 buddies and a trailer full of ATV's and gear about 200 miles from home.(had to call a buddy w/ a dmax to pick us up). Like they say, I had enough of strokin and started cummin(s).

Good luck to ya.

They didn't replace it, they cleaned it. Please don't bring thedieselstop attitude over here. I am just trying to help my friend out without getting into all the brand bashing attitude. I drive a Dodge and he drives a Ford, so what...

Like was said in earlier posts, have your buddy go back to the dealership(or a different one if possible) and have the EGR valve replaced. From my experiences, cleaning an EGR valve doesn't do the trick. They need to be replaced. I had 4 go bad and they were all replaced under warranty. The dealer I dealt with was actually pretty good. They even went to bat for me and obtained an extended warranty for me free of charge.

If it gives him any more trouble that is what he is going to do. They only charged him .5 hours to do the cleaning. He figured he would give that a shot and it is working fine at this time so he will wait and see. We didn't know it was a common problem until I posted here. No reason to get unruley about it. It is something he is having to work through with the dealer and they take good care of him also. We'll see what happens.
