Got a guy i work with that swears up and down...nothin cant beat a good ole v8 gas engine. we argue every day wich is better gas or diesel..etc. Today he asked me " well if diesels are so great why cany you put a blower on them?" and i didnt kno what to tell him. Never heard anything about it. So guys help me shut this guy up? can it be done? and if it cant..why not?
In the days of the 2 stroke diesel, a positive displacement blower was usually used.
In 4 stroke diesels I think the turbo is the rule due to efficiency. Usually higher compression and higher boost pressure than the typical gas engine.

Detroit 2 stroke Diesels came with blowers, and turbos... My dad works on a old detroit in a boat for a client with a pair of 5xxhp twin turbo, plus blower detroits.
But its not common as a turbo is better in just about every aspect than a blower...

Actually, You can. one of my friends in here put from a Ford big block 427 Paxton supercharger on to his 12 valve next to the Garrett from a FH 16 680hp Volvo Semi. The Paxton and the other superchargers are just so poorly to get on high boost numbers, so that's why these are not used on primary chargers at all. My friend pushes only 14psi with his paxton untill the big good ol turbo wakens up. After that, the supercharger is useless.
But there's no lag at all! And the 12 valve takes rpm's on neutral like a dragster! Ok, maybe I got too carried away, but it does take rpm's like posessed. Supercharger is a strong candinate for the smaller charger in compound setups. They just don't make Bolt on kits to our trucks with superchargers. But you can fit one in to our trucks and diesels.
Say to your poor little friend that the real power comes from straight 6 diesel, that's what the most powerful truck uses on the market as well. And the stock superchargers are too weak to produce enough air and boost to our beasts.

blowers also take power from the engine to spin them, where turbos do not, they use what is basically wasted energy from the exhaust to spin them.
the old 2 stroke detroits needed the blower to run, its what forced the air into the engine, otherwise they wound run.

A Powerstroke, cummins and duramax have all had blowers put on them with varying degrees of success. It seems to be working well the PS (6.0/7.3) and Dmax guys right now.

In the 1960's, Cummins put a supercharger on a couple different models. I don't recall the exact model numbers, but they were inline six's in the 250hp range.

It can be done - but you (greatly) loose effienciency, and really for the weight, cost and comlexity, there are better choices, such as a smaller & larger turbo setup.
As for you buddy - just ignore him. People who are always trying to prove a point are simply dwelling in thier insecurity. "Better to live a life of ignorance in silence than to open one's mouth and confirm thier suspicions."

Not to hijack your thread, but maybe direct into a different direction...
If that guy wants to claim how awesome his gas motor is... just offer to hook up with him... towchains between your truck and his... and see who pulls who around the parking lot... He'll figure out REAL QUICK why diesels are better engines in heavy duty trucks... especially if yours has 300k miles on it and still whoops his big block around... LOL
Then again... I guess some people just like to rollerskate uphill...

The blower on a detroit was only there to provide boost until the turbo would build boost, once the pressure was equal the blower became a little more of a drag than a help. I know some of the later detroits had a bypass that sidlined the blower once the turbo reach a certian number, I also heard that they tried a clutch before that to disengage the blower when the turbo built boost.
